When I was a "little runny nose kid" I was given a copy of what was already a classic ski flick, The Blizzard of AAHHH's. It had a profound effect on me and help change the course of my life. The first time I watched Scot Schmidt, Mike Hattrup and Glen Plake skiing in Chamonix was a moment of my life I will never forget. So when Mr. Plake offered to guide us around the very place where he had filmed his historic ski segment myself and the rest of the Unofficial crew jumped at the opportunity.
Skiing the Aiguille de Midi with Glen Plake from UnofficialSquaw on Vimeo.
The Aiguille du Midi holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m. It accesses some the the most notorious ski descents anywhere in the known universe. It is truly Big Mountain skiing from a downtown cable car. I have skied in large, glaciated mountains all over the world but the thing that surprised me the most about the skiing off the Aigulle de Midi was the shear number of people around. Everywhere you look there are groups of skiers, climbers and mountaineers enjoying the high alpine.
Big Thanks to Mr. Plake and our other Unofficial guide Dave for a great day of skiing off the Aigulle de Midi.
