El Pico De Orizaba

I’m headed down to Mexico City tomorrow morning. I have three clients coming with me to climb El Pico de Orizaba (18,701 ft.). I’ve climbed this mountain before and I absolutely loved it. I actually love the every part of the trip. Mexico City is amazing and just outside the city you can easily visit the ancient pyramids and temples of Teotihuac!¡n. And of course climbing the mountain, El Pico de Orizaba, is an awesome experience in itself. There is a refugio (hut) at 14,000 feet that is accessible by 4×4. From the hut you can do one big day up to the summit at 18,701 feet, or do a high camp at 16,000 feet and charge the summit from camp. On my last summit day on Orizaba, Popocatepetl (a nearby 17,878 foot volcano) was erupting and sending plumes of smoke and cinder 10,000 feet into the sky. From my perspective at 16,500 feet, it was an unbelievable site. The summit is on the edge of a beautiful and ominous crater rim. The views are unreal and you can see the Gulf of Mexico as well as the nearby volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl (18,000 ft.). From 16,000 feet up, Orizaba has a glacier and the potential for skiing is huge. I definitely want to come back someday with buddies and get in some spicy Mexican skiing.
