California Sunshine brings California crowds. The valley is packed with skiers and riders coming from all over to enjoy the perfict weather. Full parking lots, long lift lines and crowded eateries rule the day. However, it is looking like the weather is going to change here very soon.

Special Weather Statement

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OFF THE WEST COAST WILL MOVE EAST DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. A PLUME OF MOISTURE ORIGINATING IN THE TROPICAL PACIFIC WILL BE PULLED EAST AS THE LOW PRESSURE AREA STRENGTHENS. THIS MOISTURE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO HEAVY RAIN AND HIGH ELEVATION SNOWFALL MAINLY NORTH OF THE TAHOE BASIN. SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL BRING WARM AIR INTO THE REGION WITH SNOW LEVELS RISING TO BETWEEN 7000 AND 8000 FEET TONIGHT AND NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE 8000 FEET SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. PRECIPITATION WILL START OFF AS RAIN ACROSS MUCH OF THE EASTERN SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA TONIGHT WITH SNOW ONLY IN THE HIGHEST ELEVATIONS. THESE CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE ON SUNDAY WITH RAINFALL OCCURRING AS HIGH AS 8000 FEET IN THE SIERRA. BECAUSE THE SOIL IS QUITE DRY…MUCH OF THE RAIN WILL SOAK INTO THE GROUND. HOWEVER HEAVY PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. DURING THIS PERIOD SOME OF THE RAIN WILL RUN OFF AND CONTRIBUTE TO RISES IN RIVER AND STREAM LEVELS. THE MAIN AREAS OF CONCERN ARE THE SUSAN AND MIDDLE FORK FEATHER RIVER BASINS WHERE RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD EXCEED 3 INCHES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL MONDAY SHOULD BE LESS INTENSE…BUT WILL CONTINUE TO RUN OFF AND CONTRIBUTE TO RIVER AND STREAM RISES. PRECIPITATION WILL TAPER AND BECOME MUCH LIGHTER MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY. IN ADDITION SNOW LEVELS WILL COME DOWN SOME AND MITIGATE FURTHER RUNOFF PROBLEMS. NOAA
