Missy the Dog who was abandoned by her owner on one of Colorado’s 14ers (Colorado Hiker Abandoned Injured Dog to Die) will be adopted by one of her rescuers.

9News of Colorado had this update, One of the rescuers, John Steed, talked to 9NEWS Tuesday. He said that he hasn’t had any contact with Missy’s original owner, Anthony Ortolani, but that he’s open to a meeting.

“I hold no ill will towards Mr. Ortolani, and I think it’s great that he has agreed to relinquish custody of Missy,” Steed said.

The rescuers are starting a non-profit rescue group to retrieve animals stranded in the backcountry. They hope to have it up and running by next summer.

The criticism is that after getting down, he made no effort to rescue her. That was done by complete strangers and the original owner did nothing. POS in my opinion.

agreed, he made the right choice at the time. but then he left it up there to die for 6 days until some random people found him and managed to get him off the mountain in less than 24 hours. the first guy started out making a tough but smart choice, then became a douchebag who has no place owning an animal. second guy wins.

just to clarify (im not taking sides here) but the guy did try to save his dog by calling the clear county sheriff. the weather wasn’t ideal for a rescue either. they declined to help and then are now charging him for animal cruelty.

This is nonsense. The fact this topic is almost getting as much attention maybe even more on unofficial than the incident with the climber people left to die on Everest is crazy. It’s a dog….yes i agree don’t mistreat them but It isn’t a human life.

thats because people realize dogs are blindly loyal and will get themselves killed for you, not by their own conscious choice. a human who does on everest signed up for that risk. a dog whose owner lets him die on a mountain is a victim whose mistake was being too loyal

those left on Everest know going in that it may be a possibility they will be left to die. The dog has no choice in this situation.

I like dogs but I’m so sick of people who think they need to take their dog every place they go.

I think the issue is more about taking his dog on a hike to a 14,000 foot peak in the first place. Many like taking their dogs everywhere. But that isn’t always appropriate. Just like having a Plan B for yourself you need one for your 4 legged friend if you choose to take him along.

He was responsible for his dogs safety. It wasn’t the dogs choice to be up there, he was just being loyal. If you can’t handle the responsibility of being the center of your dog’s universe, then you shouldn’t own one. Anyone questioning that is either not a dog owner…or shouldn’t be one.

sounds like, in the final analysis, the dog will have a better life now with a responsible owner. turned out well, but what a twisted path!
