Unofficial Report: Squaw Valley

Time: 2:50pm

New Snow | Bottom: 0″ Top: 6″

Primary Surface Condition: Heavy Powder

Weather: Storming

Wind: Moderate with gusts up high

Visibility: Low

REPORT:

The expectations for the skiing today were fairly low considering this morning there was only about an inch of very slushy snow on the valley floor. The upper mountain was socked in so we headed up to investigate.

The rain turned to snow at around 7800’. Visibility was very low with whiteout conditions. The 6” of snow that had fallen was very heavy (Sierra Cement). If you did not make it out skiing today don’t feel too bad. It was wet and soggy and the heavy snow was not skiing that well. Granted, we did not start making turns until around 1:30pm and by that time much of the snow had already been skied out. The few spots we did find off Shirley that had not been skied out were quite fun. This leads me to believe that if you got out first thing this morning the conditions could have been a lot of fun.

for being so rad, let me take some notes…
    - you got out at 1:30
    - your post went live at 2:50
    - given the grammatical errors this copy must have been 10-5 minutes worth of work.
-Plus walking to and from lift
How many runs did you actually do?

The snow on top of kt was not bad this morning. It quickly turned heavy and due to a lack of avi control got shut down around 2:30. When I finally got up there was at least 14″ of heavy snow. It sucks you don’t love riding any kind of weather and miss out on some of the fun storm days can be. Maybe it is because I am from NH and I am way rader than you.
Thanks for not coming out today! More fresh lines for me!!

No complaints. Whenever we get anything is a good thing. Rode before work. Sure beats last weeks heat. Perfect Cement to fill in the kooks. I mean cracks.

Let me get this straight. Anyone who rode from 8:30 to 2:00 is an asshole, while if you were out there today you were having a bad time.

I was out from 9:00 until about 3:45. I had fun. What is it about a certain subgroup of Squaw skiers that makes them so all knowing that they can intuit whether or not I’m having a good day? Are you so omniscient/omnipotent that you can determine other people’s level of enjoyment? If you don’t want to be out, so be it. If you want to sit inside and grouse about the weather, fine. Just because you have decided to have a bad day doesn’t mean that others can’t.

The only lifts on the upper mountain were Gold Coast, Big Blue, and Shirley Lake. Shirley didn’t open until about 9:40, but when it did it was fun and smooth. The traverse into Shirley Bowl was understandably blocked off, but the tree runs were good. Rainbow Bowl skied well all day. Things got more challenging as snow got tracked out and heavier, but how many days have we had like this one all year? A day of heavy powder is certainly better than another day of sun and prematurely warm weather.

The upper mountain has the potential to be really good tomorrow if it can open. It should be wind smoothed, thick, and pristine. I’ll be there when it opens, but please feel free to opt out if you so choose. Just don’t bitch about it and try to drag others down when you do.

I agree with Skiing is better than not. I called this one in the March 18th post when UO first talked about this storm. A certain few thought it would not pan out to be good, but many had a great day yesterday. I’ll ski heavy powder any day, even if it’s only for a couple of hours. And the world is really flat after 7-11.
