Travis Rice’s Supernatural Big Mountain Terrain Park

The SuperNatural competition is scheduled for the best conditions day between February 3rd & 9th.  It has been NUKING in interior British Columbia (the course is built in Nelson, B.C.) this winter and the conditions right now are ALL-TIME.  This competition is going to change everything.

“It took nine loggers more than 7,500 hours and 243 chainsaw sharpenings to create over 80 features in the course. Now, with the work having taken place during the snow-free summer, the 2,200 vertical feet of the Scary Cherry run has been built into Rice’s dream snowboard run and is fully ready for the arrival of 18 of the world’s best snowboarders on February 3.” – Red Bull

THE SUPERNATURAL COURSE:

- 40+ degrees on initial pitch

- 35 degrees after initial pitch & this is where most of the wooden features are

- 300-foot wide kicker mid-way down the slope to powder landing zone

- 30 degree slope after the kicker with a ton of slopestyle terrain park features

“Inspiration for the course design came from nature, straight up, and the crazy features that I’ve seen people ride,” said Rice. “Also, some inspiration came from what they are able to do with mountain biking courses, like building stuff through the trees. There’s no limit to what is possible with a little creativity and some will.”

This very well could be the coolest, most interesting thing to happen to the snowboard/ski world.  This has the potential to be vomiting sick.  This could change the way we ride mountains.  If this is as big a success as we think it could be, we may all begin seeing these big mountain terrain parks spring up all over North America.

Check out how deep it’s been in the interior lately here:  “Pillow Land” from January 25th, 2011.

Looks like Mr. Shaun White was scared or not invited. Considering that it is Red Bull event he musthave been invited but chose not to show how “great” he is.

Add Mark McMorris and Sage Kotsenburg to the rider list, wild card qualifiers based on X games results. They’ve accepted their invites. Shaun White turned his down. And the event will be shown live on red bull tv, their free online streaming service. Stoked!

The rider list makes my heart skip a beat.

I’d be afraid the mountain might not stand up with the weight of all those huge balls on it.

this is like SSX but real… can’t fucking wait to have my mind blown; and ride30, he was invited, i think he’s not going though due to his ankle… just a guess though. im not a shaun white mega fan but he did the xgames to do slopestyle but he couldn’t so i would’ve loved to see what he’s been working on, regardless of what anyone thinks of him he is still one of the best snowboarders on earth.

Does anyone else have a problem with the “future” of freestyle requiring Travis Rice to chop down a bunch of pretty old looking trees for a 2 or 3 day event.
While I wouldn’t mind watching the footage of this.. I think it looks hideous and will never actually make it to a resort near you due to liability and maintenance issues.

I do agree the this looks like shit w/o snow and kinda sucks that these trees need to be cut for a single special comp. I would have to think that Travis and Red Bull plan to use this ideal peice of land for future Rice parks.
To stassshhh: you are rite, the stash is made up of wood features. The difference is that the Rice creation does not look to be a sustainable resort park. The Stash is made up of treated and painted wood features. The Rice park looks to be topped trees with natural logs on top and other natural log features.

There are plenty of MTB courses out there that are built in the very same way. They are built to stand over time, not for one time use. Properly built and with a little maintenance they can last.

No more than I have a problem with the “future” of civilization clear cutting forests, or pumping billions of barrels of pretty oil out of the earth, to facilitate our economy and recreational consumption.

50 to 70 trees…And I bet they didn’t even grind them into pulp to make boxes for you to buy one book at a time from amazon. How offensive!

I am excited to see how this plays out. Seems like Travis is trying to take one out of Darren Berrecloth playbook. The features look a bit awkward.

It’s amazing how many people have their own “critical analysis” of these situations. Whether you like or dislike Trice or agree or disagree with his contest, it doesn’t matter. If you feel so strongly about something than step up and show us all your insane double corks over huge gaps. Show us your idea for an amazing contest and get this list of riders to show up with this type of coverage. Really, put up or shut up. He is delivering and so he gets to carry the conversation. If you want to, then deliver. End of story. Trice showed up to Super park 11 years ago as a nobody. He talked his way in and threw down. He did not get where he is without huge balls and a love for the sport as a whole. Shaun White loves one thing-winning…in the pipe. He cares about himself. White gets credit for being a great competitor, but it stops there. HIs no show proves that unless we are chatting about super pipe, Shaun’s name doesn’t need to take up space in a conversation. Done.
