This unusual tram known as the “Skiway” was built in 1951. The tram or “bus” used its own engine to power the rear wheels which ‘drove’ the bus up to the Timberline Lodge (The Lodge from the Shining) 3.1 miles uphill from the base station. It ran from 1951 – 1953 holding 36 passengers taking approximately 10 minutes.
Unfortunately, the Skiway was a financial bust; the road to the Timberline Lodge was improved the following year, and the shuttle bus to it was 50¢ compared to the Skiway’s 75¢ fare. After three years, the Skiway went bust.
