Homewood, CA (Lake Tahoe)
Located in California on the shores of Lake Tahoe, Homewood Resort has some of the best views of any ski resort in the world. With an average snowfall of around 450 inches per season, and a whopping 300 days of sunshine per year, it’s no wonder that Homewood is Tahoe’s little secret.
Treble Cone, New Zealand
This expansive mountain has the longest vertical rise in the Southern Lakes with far reaching boundaries spread over two large basins. Mother Nature has taken care of the terrain sculpting fun gullies, wide faces and exciting undulating runs. The ski area covers two basins - the Saddle and Home basin. Both provide some of the best free riding in New Zealand and are famous for putting you on top of the Southern Alps with the outlook to match. Any day is a good one to explore the mountain with mates and share the challenge and excitement of new found runs, powder pockets or lips.
Alyeska, Alaska
With an average annual snowfall of 650 inches, no llift lines, diverse terrain and unparalleled views, Alyeska is skiing and riding’s last frontier. 2,500 vertical feet, 1,400 acres of terrain and plenty of steep stashes for all.
Grouse Mountain, Canada
Grouse Mountain, located outside Vancouver, Canada is rare in that it provides sweeping views of a major city. Breathtaking panoramic views of the city, sea and surrounding mountains unfold, culminating with a summit altitude of 4100 feet.
Lake Louise, Canada
Spectacular scenery awaits at the Lake Louise Ski Area with uniquely beautiful terrain that is both vast and varied. Our 4200 skiable acres are surrounded by wilderness that is pristine and inspirational. Happo-One, Japan
Hakuba Happo-one located on the island of Honshu is one of Japan’s largest and most famous ski resorts. The area is blessed with breathtaking panoramic views of Hakuba’s hugely impressive mountain range and striking beauty of excellence. It is also known as the competition venue for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games Nagano and thus offers visitors to the region exciting and challenging ski slopes. The ski runs extend east from Mt. Karamatsu (elevation 2696m) to the base areas-Nakiyama, Shirakaba, Kokusai, Sakka – where they spread out in a fan-like form with the majestic Northern Japanese Alps rising to 3000m in the background.
Grand Targhee, Wyoming
Grand Targhee Resort is a mountain resort situated on the western slope of the Tetons in Alta, Wyoming. The Grand is continually recognized for it’s great snow, light powder snow (more than 500 inches annually), scenic beauty and excellent value. In addition to the view Grand Targhee reserves 602 acres every winter for powderhounds on the snowcat.
Cerro Catedral, Argentina
Cerro Catedral sites on the doorway to Patagonia in southern Argentina. Classic Andes rock spires mixed with views of Nahuel Huapi Lake make for intoxicating views of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Le Brevent, Chamonix France
Le Brevent and La Flegere (2525m) on the sunny south side of the Chamonix Valley are the closest skiing areas to Chamonix’s main town centre. Skiers and snowboarders are guaranteed to find something to their liking from the vast array of moderate, challenging and difficult runs from the top of Planpraz (Le Brevent), Cornu (Le Brevent) and Index (La Flegere) chairlifts. For many years these two areas were separate until lift systems linked them together in 1997 with the introduction of the Liaison cable car forming one larger area.

why not make it an even ten?? whitefish?
I second that, big mountain on a clear day lookin into glacier… how can you beat that
Whaaa? No Baker?? Make it top10 and add Baker. Do it. do it.
You should really look at the view from the top of Big White in Canada!
All I remember about the view from the top of Big White was eternal logging slashes. Dude, you need to visit other areas. Like maybe Revelstoke or Whistler.
Big White has OK views. Not bad, bit too much logging but not bad. It can’t hold a candle to these places though.
screw big white
Crystal Mountain. Mt Rainier! duh
For sure Crystal should be on this list. You can practicaly touch Rainier and the rest of the moutain ranges within view are amazing.
Yea, the 5 clear days out of the year!
Crystal MT!!
How can Crystal Mt, WA not make the list. Incredible views or Mt Rainier
and other Mts.
(I’ve been at 6 of the 9 listed)
Snow King, like Targhee but way less snow and better views IMO
I agree< snowking is so fun too!
I’d replace Cerro Catedral with Cerro Bayo.
An impossible list. Homewood is a good call, but the views from Alpine Meadows, Heavenly, Mt. Rose, and DP of the same lake don’t suck either. The view off the back of the Whistler Peak chair is mind-blowing. On and on…
Telluride – the San Juans!
When it comes to CO the San Juans are where it’s at.
Maybe not the tenth but snowbird has a pretty sick view if you live in the valley you can see almost every part. Easily top 20
I know I’m always inspired by the view of the sprawl filled Salt Lake Valley smothered in yummy brown air from Hidden Peak. 9 out of 10 blind taste testers prefer the view of Mt. Superior from Alta over Snowbird, unfortunately only the Sunnyside lift and tow rope were running at the time of the survey…
I know I’m biased because I grew up on this mountain, but Loveland Ski Area in Colorado. Lift 9 goes all the way to the apex of the continental divide, and you can see for hours in every direction!
Hours of Interstate 70
Don’t hate. HEAVENLY, CA!!
as much as I hate the heave, the view is “epic”
Heavenly haters, you can see the lake and the valley from up there, the views blow homewood away by a long shot…
Maybe not worthy of the tenth spot but Mt High in socal is worth a mention. High desert off the front side with LA, Catalina Island and the Pacific off the back side. The sunrise over the high desert will take your breath away.
ha ya thanks but no thanks on the epic view of LA smog. Try catchin a sunrise from a Tahoe resort sometime.
The article was about ski RESORTS.
Not hills with more dirt than snow
BRECKENRIDGE ,Colorado a must in the top 10!!!!!!!!
Fuck you.
Why so much disrespect? Colorado is beautiful!
Because Breck is crap for views, if you are going to say any CO resort, how about Wolf Creek, Telluride, Crested Butte. Breck has some of the most obnoxious and redundant views of any resort with the exception of Winter Park/Mary Jane or Steamboat. Just my view on it.
ummm… Whistler Blackcomb?
Telluride? Any of the Aspen Mountains… come on!
Narvikfjellet? Its got over 3000 vertical feet and you you look straight down to the ocean
Just one example:
http://www.narvikfjellet.no/artikkelbilder/bilde_8_9_avis.jpg
schweitzer.
on a clear day the view of the lake is incredible
Big blue off the t-bar has solid views
Big Blue
Donner Ski Ranch
trolllololololololol
Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho should have been on this list. A bluebird day and you can see into 3 states and Canada! Lake Pend Oreille is a bonus!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3074/2965495540_2f2a8c2650.jpg
What about Vail? The view and the sounds of the interstate are glorious…
Heavenly!! Without a doubt!
Most of the Tahoe resorts have great lake views, but you can’t have 5 or 6 resorts on the list with the same view, and homewood’s probably the best.
just because Homewood is the closest to the lake doesn’t make it the best. In my opinion you need to get high and away from the lake to appreciate the surrounding terrain. Homewood feels like a resort in the midwest sometimes. Heavenly, Alpine, Squaw, Mt Rose, Diamond peak, and even Kirkwood blow homewood out of the water for views
The Matterhorn from the Gornergrat, one of several separate ski complexes in Zermatt, Switzerland. Not the resort’s best ski terrain, but 5-star views of one of the world’s iconic mountains.
just made a photo I took of Brevent my facebook cover photo – amazing place!
Whiteface Mtn in the Adirondacks of New York State!!!
There is no reason to discuss east coast mountains on this list…but pretending for a second that the list was “top 5 east coast resorts with a view”; here’s the list and f-you in advance to all the responses; of course I’d prefer to ski pretty much anywhere else…
1. Wildcat, NH
2. Whiteface, NY
3. Cannon, NH
4. Camden Snow Bowl, ME
5. Stowe/Smugg/Jay Peak, VT (tied)
Big Squaw Mtn, in Greenville Maine should be on this least coast list.
Le Massif, when you ski down right down to the St-Laurence river, amazing !
Glencoe – check out the view of Rannoch Moor
Cervinia
Glencoe is a rad little ski area. However, the view is nowhere near the top 10, never mind the top 100.
Purden Ski Resort. Prince George, BC. Just sayin.
No Switzerland – Zermatt should totally be on this list.
If Switzerland was included it would dominate the top 20
Homewood views usually feature only a few skiers to interupt in your enjoyment of the surroundings. Heavenly is like Bay Area highway congestion, (raw views aside, immediate disqualification from this thread).
Number ten, how about Verbier?
How about a thread of the ten most ghetto resorts (view/surroundings/rifraff)? I’m sure some of the mid-eastern resorts hit this rhelm but how about some US resorts that are just too close to mass-humanity for their own good?
you must ride groomers only i rarely see tourists in mott, killebrew, firebreak, Avy bowl, or any of the other 1000s upon 1000s of acres of trees and the views from 10000ft beat homewoods anyday any weather
Crystal Mt. Rainier view
Mt. Baker (Shuksan arm) enough said!!!
yeah but you never see the view.
Mt. Eyak- Cordova, Alaska
100% agree!
No east coast? The views from Bolton Valley and the summit at Mt Ellen at Sugarbush are amazing, you look right onto Lake Champlain and the White mountains in NY.
Wildcat for its views of mount washington and some east coast love
I’m guessing the author hasn’t actually seen Treble Cone in person. It should easily be at the top of the list, above Homewood.
The Chimney is a mountain, am I right?
dolomites are pretty sick looking so i would add cortina
Dolomites are awsome!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hP6Yg9OyOY
Nobodys mentioning the summer sunrise and sets at Timberline. When your above the clouds at 8500ft and watch the sun break through and burn em off every morning Its easily comparable to the best bluebird winter views the PNW has to offer. Crystal and bachelor are pretty amazing every winter too.
June Mountain too! You have Mono lake looking north with the sierra range to the west. South you are looking down 395 toward Mammoth and more of the Sierras, it’s a bad ass.
http://500px.com/photo/5678670
http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/48582473.jpg
June Mt. may have died this year.
Is it Gone ?
Whitefish (aka Big MTN) in Montana, looking at GNP hile you ski
Southback at Crystal on a clear day, best view around.
key part: “on a clear day”
(ha ha)
http://www.whistlerescape.com/images/View-of-Whistler-and-Black-Tusk-from-7th-Heaven.JPG
Whistler and any of the views.. Gorgeous
“The ski runs extend east from Mt. Karamatsu (elevation 2696m) to the base areas-Nakiyama, Shirakaba, Kokusai, Sakka”
No they don’t. The ski runs are nowhere near Mt. Karamatsu. They start at 1850m well down the ridge.
Big Squaw Mountain! its up deah
Jackson Hole! Views amazing!
BOREAL! Spectacular views of I80 and the Ranch!
While Boreal does offer possibly the best view of interstate 80 of any ski area nothing tops the sunsets. I’ll go out on a limb here and claim Boreal as having a top ten sunset…it’s consistent due to the awesome smog layer pushing up from the Sacramento valley.
http://images6.onthesnow.com/ots/image_gallery/flickr/flickr_7079_Gallery_Large.jpg
Definitely Crystal Mountain, WA!!!!!!!!
King Pine/ Purity Springs Resort NH
Telluride! Duh.
Schweitzer…
Wengen, Switzerland… you can’t beat views of the Eiger and Jungfrau in the Alps!
i would agree with crystal and schweitzer… and i dont know if anyone else here has skied red lodge mountain MT but its right on the edge of the beartooth range and you can see miles and miles over flat plains from the summit of the mountain… the skiing is good there too when they have lots of snow
Growing up in Billings MT I second this for sure. I don’t know how I forgot to mention the mountain I grew up on. Incredible views of the Beartooth range for sure.
Diamond Peak! How is this not up there? Anyone who has been to homewood and Diamond Peak knows Diamond Peak has the better views.
The view in Europe shit on most of that list.
Exactly. And you don’t have to be much of a skier to know that. The scenery there is ridiculous. Waaaayy better than USA resorts.
Sorry. I went off track there. Of course the top spots are all in the USA and I’ve been to Mexico and overseas (Hawaii). USA!! USA!!! USA!! Pow! Bang! Pow!
Strandafjellet, Norway –> http://www.strandafjellet.no/prod_images/doc_216_9.jpg
(http://www.strandafjellet.no)
WHITEFISH – Big MTN
Have to agree with TELLURIDE. I have a photo there that truly looks like a postcard!
Say what you want about the tourist factor, but the top of Sky chair at Heavenly has got to be up there. Desert valley on one side, giant alpine lake on the other. Seriously.
don’t forget looking off the backside in the puff spots at freel and jobs from up there too…
Arizona Snowbowl. From the top you can see the curve of the earth, the grand Canyon, and Sedona’s red rocks.
DP should be on there too.
The view of the “Laguna del Inca” from the Roca Jack is breath taking.
Purgatory Has a rad view.
Arizona Snowbowl?
Krippenstein (freeridearena) Austria on Dachstein west glacier with view to the Hallstätter lake…
http://www.krippenstein.com/typo3temp/pics/6c1b537023.jpg
Revlestoke or Big Sky/ Yellowstone Club
Telluride is good, long views into the desert, Purg in Durango….. not the best skiing, but epic views of the Needless from the front side!
Red Lodge, MT. About the only good thing about that mountain actually.
stowe/mansfield can have a very pastoral bucolic look to it
http://teachski.com/pcindex2004/mansfieldstowe1.jpg
Mount Washington on Vancouver Island, Can.: a sea of peaks and the waters of the Strait of Georgia – beautiful.
http://www.mountwashington.ca/
when it’s not snowing, Baker has the best views in north america for sure
valle nevado
ummmm the dolomites in italy…. absolutely gorgeous by far better then half of these
Anything with a decent view of Lake Tahoe deserves to be on the list. Heavenly and Diamond Peak have views that equal Homewood’s.
Big Mountain Montana has pretty sick view of Glacier Park, the Mission Range, and Flathead Valley. Pretty amazing on a clear day
Freesports Arena Krippenstein! Look at this:
http://www.krippenstein.com/winter/freesports-arena/region-inneres-salzkammergut/
the third picture ))
ZERMATT SWITZERLAND!!!!! It is w/out parallel in the views of the matterhorn!
Cypress on a clear night… amazing view of Vancouver.
Eaglecrest ski area, Juneau, AK is on an island in Alaska. Most beautiful
Verbier Mt Fort on a fesh powder day
Bristol Mountain?
Mt Ruapehu – New Zealand

Thanks!
Targhee should not be on this list, you can’t see the view posted of the Grand Teton on 99% of the terrain. Honestly I would have put Sun Valley, ID on the list but its hard to make a list like this, so many awesome places!
Heav > Homewood. hands down.
Mt. Bohemia in the Keenawah Peninsula has a delicious view of Lake Superior!
Look any direction off from chair 4 at Kirkwood, pure, unbastardised, high sierra. Almost any mountain offers great views, Heavenly has great views, but you have to ski Heavenly
when it’s not snowing, Baker has the best views in north america for sure
Volcán Osorno or Antillanca down here in the south of Chile, Chilean rainforest, you’re skiing a volcano, you have beautiful views of at least other 5 volcanoes and beautiful lakes, come visit!
Le Massif
I strongly suggest Big Sky/Moonlight Basin, Mt for #10- the view from the top of 11,166 ft. Lone Peak is incomparable. You truely feel like you’re on the top of the world, with views of over half a dozen other mountain ranges, at least 2 valleys, 2 national parks, & 3 states- on a clear day we can see your Tetons from here! The views of the Spanish Peaks from the lower elevations are also very deserving of being recognized, as is the view of Lone Peak from the base area or the top of Andesite Mtn.
Revelstoke should be the 10-th mountain with the best views. It has a huge river right below the mountain in the deep valley and the horizon is framed with other mountain ridges.
