snow 620x136

While skiing at Squaw was good today, it’s about to get great; and just in time for Christmas!  After receiving around 8 inches on the upper mountain (and more in places), Tahoe is slated to get pounded with 2 to 5 feet of new snow in the next five days or so.  The Mayans forgot to mention that the end of days is coming in the form of bottomless snow.

Just take a look at what NOAA has to say:

...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT ABOVE 4000 FEET...

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 2 TO 5 FEET POSSIBLE.

* TIMING: MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL BEGINS NORTH OF INTERSTATE 80
THURSDAY AND SPREADS SOUTHWARD THURSDAY NIGHT. MODERATE TO HEAVY
SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MOST OF THE WEEKEND.

That’s right folks, this storm is scheduled to come in cold and heavy.  The Storm Watch is in effect for elevations above 4,000 feet…can you say cold smoke powder?!?  With highs in the mid to upper 20′s above 7,000 feet and barely reaching above 32 in Truckee, this storm is going to be all snow, and lots of it.

3 considerable

Keep an eye on the Avy rating

Keep in mind that there remains a lingering rain crust from December 2nd, and the snow pack has substantial faceting underneath this crust.  Even with this past storm, there was substantial avalanche activity with the potential to step down to this rain crust/facet layer (check out how Squaw was affected)With this amount of new snow, the avalanche danger will rise considerably, be sure to keep an eye on the avalanche fore cast at the sierraavalanchecenter.org.  Whether your heading into the backcountry or to your local resort, stay informed through the storm cycle and check the forecast daily!

jamie blair deep powder

Get out your powder boards out (if ya haven’t already), fill the snow blower full of fuel, stoke the fires, and prepare for bottomless pow in the coming days! (and lets all hope the world doesn’t come to an end this Friday!)

Happy Winter!

Avalanche rating. The higher the number the more likely there will be an avalanche if you’re hiking/skiing in the back country.

Squaw is going to get pownded, but KSL has pownded Dave’s Deli, after 36 years at squaw, KSL has told Liz she can no longer sell beer. This may be the end of Dave’s. I guess KSL really does stand for Kill Squaw Locals.
