The North Face Jakson Jacket | Gear Review

Breathable. Warm. Gangsta. What else is needed for a midlayer jacket? Probably not too much, but if it is needed, the Jakson jacket can take care of it. The fleece … Read More

Some Mini-Lines on Whistler Mountain | Alpine Closed b/c of Avalanche Danger

November 30th, 2011 by

After it rained to 2100 meters the super stoke in whistler was deflated back to reality. Whistlerites were beginning to get get a little cocky with their early season luck. With 30mm of rain in the village about 50cm of snow fell in the high alpine, AND the avalanche danger went through the roof. Nonetheless, Leo, Jonny, Eliel, Charlie and Jake went for a hike and tried to find some good snow in the high alpine. The hike to Harmony chair was open and some large avalanches were seen,  “the tiger is hunting” as one ski patrol put it. Just check out this Avalanchev in Corona Bowl on Blackcomb.

Blackcomb Opening Day | 3 Feet of Powder | The Opening Marathon Continues

November 25th, 2011 by

Tired, beat, drained, worked, sleepy… are common words heard at the Unofficial house this week. Three feet in three days and the opening of Blackcomb did more than cook our legs and test our lungs it succeeded in being the hardest opening week competition that we have ever skied in.

60cm (2 feet) Overnight | Day 5 on Whistler

November 24th, 2011 by

60cm overnight to make shredding on the 22nd a must!

So shredding ensued. This time, unlike the day Whistler opened, the Unofficial squad told the helicopters and film crew to take a day off. This time we had to make a video from only the shots we got that day while skiing, and still do some skiing of our own. Somehow it worked out though and sans helicopters and sleds and oodles of money we have yet another short video of real people actually skiing real terrain that you might encounter on a ski mountain, like Whistler. So, to all the haters: stop pretending you rip just because you watch a lot of ski movies. Just like Santa Clausisn’t real, your favorite ski movie doesn’t come together in one day. Either way, enjoy the snow and don’t get bummed, it is still falling here and there’s plenty to go around.

Day 3 on Whistler | [Embedded] with Unofficial Whistler

November 21st, 2011 by

As Whistler Mountain opened it became apparent that nobody now occupied the status of being Embedded anywhere on the mountain. Preparations for opening day had ended, however Unofficial Whistler took it upon themselves to dig in and report from the top of the mountain. After being Embedded in the Peak ski patrol hut for over 7 minutes, the dedication and hard work of day 3 skiers and boarders had been captured and documented by the entrenched Unofficial Whistlerite. Some turns ultimately were coaxed from tired legs after multiple hikes to the Peak and overall this Embedded experience was both taxing and revealing. Mountain rats revealed and legs taxed. Check back for news and video of the storm we hope hits this week.

An Opening Day Better than Yours | Powder & Tree Skiing on Whistler Mountain

November 19th, 2011 by

Whistler is open and Zeus, or cupid, or someone up there knows it! A storm prepped Whistler with 29cm (11in) of new snow just for opening day on Friday the 18th of Mustache Movember. The facial hair was dirty and a foggy morning eventually gave way to a beautiful semi-powder day. Occasional ski-to-rock contact chimed in with hoots-n- hollers-a-plenty to form a lovely day 1 soundtrack. Let the season begin! Here’s what opening day had in store for Unofficial Whistler.
