April Fool’s Day Powder Video @ Squaw

April 3rd, 2012 by

This video comes from our good buddy Kris Thomas.  Kris was tearing up Squaw on Sunday and captured some of the goodness on his brain camera (actually surgically attached to his optic and vagus nerves).

Where’d you guys find the best snow on Sunday?  According to KT, it appears that it was all about Light Towers on CII.

We’ve got another little snow storm coming in tonight.  Might be enough to get the Chimney open…we’ll see.

Still Really, Really Good in Hakuba, Japan

April 3rd, 2012 by

This video is courtesy of Nick Kowal, owner of the one and only Hakuba Powder Lodge. It is fairly long, and all POV, but well worth a  look. Luckily, just about every part of the video is pretty damn good, so sample a few minutes wherever you feel like watching. This video covers the tail end of the last storm in Hakuba, and the high pressure that followed. Way to get after it, Nick!

Pain McShlonkey Classic VIDEO… What went down, and how it happened. Chinese Downhill and Small Mountain Invitational.

April 2nd, 2012 by

This past weekend I was lucky enough to get invited to compete in the Pain McShlonkey Classic. It was really an honor to wear the badge and be an ambassador to the Shane McConkey Foundation.

Stoked to be able to represent Shane!

The weekend was pretty ridiculous. The event was supposed to start with some  of the Red Bull Air Force team skydiving into Rocker at Squaw. High winds caused this to be cancelled, but the party still went down. Red Bull brought a humongous truck with DJ and loud music included. The party continued through the day to the Gala in the evening.

Red Bull brought this monster in with a DJ an a lot of speakers

Lets talk about the event though. The event was amazing. Athletes flew in from all over the country to compete and represent Shane in the proper way, and I think Shane would have been proud. The event started at just a tad after 9am with a “Chinese Downhill”.  This event was brutal. Unlike last year which was a glorified powder run, this was an icy, moguly, hardpacked mess of competitors coming down KT. There was carnage everywhere and it seemed most competitors crashed the whole way down the first face. Daron Rahlves (who referred to himself as DMoney during pre-event trash talking emails) won. Guess he backed it up.  He took home the golden saucer for the boys, with Shelly Robertson taking home the Golden Saucer for the girls.

The Small Mountain Invitational was just as exciting. The course was a mix of hardpack moguls with several features to jump off. The name of the game (according to the judges) was no big airs. In fact, Ice Goddess and several other airs were out of bounds, and hitting them meant disqualification. This obviously stopped nobody.  We saw repelling down Ice Goddess, Kristian Giessler sending Tombstone pretty big and lots of tomahawking. I’m pretty confident that everybody there had an amazing time, so THANK YOU SHANE!

JP Auclair Getting Deep at Ratallack in B & W

April 2nd, 2012 by

You remember JP Auclair?  You know the Québécois kid that helped Salomon create the 1080 ski and is the owner of Armada skis with Tanner Hall.  Yeah, he’s good at skiing and ski innovation.  His most innovative moment in the ski industry came in this past fall’s “All.  I.  Can.” where he’s skiing thru a suburb with style.

We know you’ve seen it, but…WATCH IT AGAIN!  We still can’t get over how much fun this clip is to watch.

Sean Petit Getting Molested by a GOAT & Slaughtering Alaska Lines…Video

This is a teaser of the Alaska segment that Sean Petit skis in for Poor Boyz.

It’s pretty funny to watch Sean get molested by a goat.  If you just wanna see the skiing, skip to 1:11.

Alaska is going off this year.  It’s so filled in that you can ski A LOT more than you normally can.  Lots of crazy good terrain that is usually just rock.

Is Alaska calling you?

Squaw Today = Raining, Wet, & Miserable…but, Sunday is Gonna Be Sweet!

VIDEO: 2012 Visa US Grand Prix Ski Slopestyle Hits the Airwaves | Catch Mammoth Freeski Action on NBC | Watch the Teaser Here

March 30th, 2012 by

On Sunday, March 4th, 2012 Mammoth Mountain played host to one of this season’s most dominating displays of freeskiing aerial annihilation. The 2012 Visa U.S. Grand Prix Men’s & Women’s Slopestyle lived up to its billing and more. The sky was blue, the jumps were massive and the talent was juiced (no, pretty sure steroids were not involved).

So, why should you be concerned with an event now 3+ weeks extinct? Tomorrow, Saturday, March 31st at 12pm PST NBC Sports Networks will be airing this very event (check your local listings), that’s why! Watch the above Unofficial Networks original production to get your stoke-on for this high-caliber competition.

Couldn’t make it to the mountains this weekend for a little extended winter shredding? (Sorry to hear that) Well, here’s the next best thing. Normally I wouldn’t endorse staying inside to watch TV on a Saturday, but 1) these skiers are that good, and 2) it’s forecasted to rain throughout much of CA anyhow. Oh yeah… and don’t forget Torin Yater-Wallace’s 1800 – that is definitely worth tuning in for too.
