One Minute Of Slow-mo Pow + Snow Is Coming Back!

January 9th, 2013 by

During our last storm Cycle 2 weeks ago that dropped over 50 inches of light fluffy essence on us Vanessa Aadland was out everyday getting the goods.  However her camera quit working after one run.  At least it was a good run.

It’s time to get stoked for some powder skiing with up to 2 feet of snowing coming.

Cold = Fluffy Snow

snow forecast 1 9 13 620x231

We like these numbers.

Salomon Freeski TV is back for Season 6. In the initial episode of the season, Tabibito, the Salomon crew heads to Japan with guide Tatsya Tayagaki, who takes Cody Townsend, Mark Abma and Mike Douglas under his wing and into some DEEP Japan POW.

“As editor of Bravoski Magazine, Tatsya Tayagaki’s job is to keep his finger on the pulse of Freeskiing in Japan. He travels the country in his home-on-wheels in search of passionate skiers and hope after the nation was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Las Leñas Conditions 7/22: Powder Day!

July 22nd, 2012 by

Saturday 7/21 delivered the storm that we desperately needed here in Las Leñas, and today was a classic first sunny day powder day. This video shows the standard first powder day timeline: morning Cenidor runs, mid day Vulcano, and afternoon Marte. For many of us, today was the first true powder of the season, so stoke levels were running high.

It is hard to say how much fresh snow we’ve received. Something like 12 inches, with a whole lot of wind to really smooth things over and fill everything in. Conditions primarily consisted of good powder with a very light wind skin, with some areas looking a little scoured, and others with some breakable wind crust (carton).

Despite really heavy winds, ski patrol was kind enough to give us all one good Marte run in the afternoon. If you ever find yourself complaining that they don’t try to open Marte in heavy winds, remember today!

Patrol only opened Mercurio and “variations” today, so Eduardo and the South Wall remain untouched for tomorrow. It isn’t clear whether tomorrow will be blue, or stormy and gray instead.

Winter’s Not Over Yet… Still Skiing Powder in AK | May 18th

May 19th, 2012 by

Winter is still going strong up here in Alaska. Low pressure last week brought quite a bit of snow up high, and there is still plenty of powder to be had up there. This video is from May 16th through 18th on Turnagain Pass on the Kenai Peninsula. This winter has been all-time in Alaska, and with a top-up in mid-May, it keeps getting better. We are back in some low pressure now, so hopefully there will be another refresh up high when it clears.

DCP: Under the Influence

April 30th, 2012 by

David Carrier Porcheron (DCP) has been one of the most talented and well rounded snowboarders ever to come out of Canada. He’s competed in the US open halfpipe, the Westbeach Classic, filmed video parts with Mack Dawg, travelled the world with Burton’s UnInc team and successfully started a snowboard brand (Yes! Snowbaords). Starting out riding the icy halfpipes of Quebec, his riding has evolved making him a backcountry powerhouse and a role model to a generation.

When DCP isn’t helping to run YES! Snowboards, surfing, or shredding gnarly powder lines with Travis Rice, he’s giving back to the planet by planting trees in Costa Rica to offset his carbon footprint. DCP is also involved with POW (Protect Our Winters), a non-profit organization who’s mission is to “unite and actively engage the global snow sports community to lead the fight against climate change.”

Spy optics just released this video that documents his life over the last 20 years. Take a watch and get educated on how this rider has influenced our sport.

The Balance of Powder | Sherpa Cinema’s Short Film

April 27th, 2012 by

The Balance of Powder is a short ski and snowboard film by Sherpa Cinema.  It was filmed at Mica Heliskiing and Island Lake Catskiing in B.C.  The first minute of the film has some nice shots, but if action is what you want, skip to 6 minutes.  The whole film is full of ups and downs, but when it isn’t advertising either lodge: Mark Abma, JP Auclair, Lynsey Dyer, James Heim, Ian Mcintosh and others are just having a great time tearing it up not worrying about skiing the biggest gnarliest line.

“This terrain is filled with billions of pillows, steep lines, and everything seems to be pretty packed in tight together, like you can get really amongst it in a snap.”

Highlights

  • 6:15- Group powder slaying through trees
  • 8:15- Sweet tree skiing
  • 13:00- Start of big steep terrain
  • 15:40 Deep blower POW

My bucket list keeps growing faster than I can check things off!

Has anyone ever skied or ridden with either operations?  Did you have tits deep blower?

Wishing It Was January – JaPOW At It’s Finest

April 22nd, 2012 by

With spring in full swing, and soft snow becoming harder and harder to find, it is about time for a mid winter flashback. This video, courtesy of Jon Ramstedt, was primarily shot in the Nozawa Onsen area in Japan. It really shows what January in Japan is all about: really, really, ridiculously deep powder skiing. If you haven’t experienced the JaPOW before, start planning your trip. Is it too early to start dreaming about next winter?

It’s been tits at Whistler Blackcomb

-

The Unofficial Whistler mansion, I mean basement cave … is filled with couch monkeys, soggy socks, stinky boots and wet gloves. What’s also filling up is our Hard Drive. Here’s some shots we dug up and edited together for your viewing pleasure. It features the Brothers Cohn, Eliel Hindert and his morman munchkins from Utah + a few other random humans.
