Super POW Snurfing | “Sinking Feeling”

November 27th, 2012 by

Snurfing - The act of surfing on snow. The precursor to snowboarding.

Snurfing was extremely popular in the early days of snowboarding, until Jake Burton started dominating the competition scene in the late seventies by attaching bindings to his board. “Sinking Feeling”, a short edit from Almond MFG, makes a strong argument for ditching the bindings and giving in to the natural ride of a binding-less board.  Their handmade White Wave Traction setup promises to allow you to,

“Surf the mountain on almost any snowboard or splitboard you already have. Redraw lines of seasons past. Familiar terrain has an entirely new feel.”

These bindings are handmade in Revelstoke and would be pretty rad to have in your quiver on a waist deep day.

October Deepness – Early Season STOKE from Fernie, BC

October 30th, 2012 by

November 1st is fast approaching, so what better to do then look back at how shockingly deep October was in Interior BC?

This video comes from Dylan Siggers in Fernie shredding some pre-halloween freshies. This video is a few days old, but just the fact that you could have been shredding  57cms of coldsmoke in October, should be making you pack your bags for the misty mountains.

Fernie is set to open on December 1st.

Salomon Freeski TV – Season 6 Teaser

Salomon Freeski TV dropped the teaser for their sixth season today and its pretty awesome. The teaser has an incredible abundance of pow, these guys (and girls) never seem to be without a smile on their faces, “it’s still about being in nature and just loving that freedom that skiing gives you.” The footage at 1:09 alone is intriguing enough to get psyched up for season 6, not to mention a ton of awesome footage from some of the best on the planet.

Music: “Summer Long” by Xylos

“Salomon Freeski TV is back for it’s 6th season! Twelve short films will be released online bi-weekly starting October 9, 2012. This year the Salomon team chased powder and stories through Russia, Japan, Chile, Austria, France, Sicily, Canada, USA and more in what promises to be the best season yet.

STAND: A Stand Up Paddle Adventure Through the Great Bear Rainforest, Canada

June 5th, 2012 by

B4Apres is currently working on a new film entitled “STAND: A SUP Adventure Through the Great Bear Rainforest,” which will be released in the spring of 2013. For now, we will have to settle for a look at the trailer. Not only does the trailer give us a taste of what promises to be an interesting adventure, but it shows some incredible wildlife and scenery in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest.

“STAND” will document a stand up paddle adventure through the Great Bear Rain Forest in order to raise awareness for the potential damages of a proposed pipeline that will pass through the area.

The Great Bear Rainforest, located on the North Coast of British Columbia makes up 25% of the world’s remaining intact temperate rainforest. Roughly the size of Ireland, the Great Bear is one of the planet’s rarest forest ecosystems. Lapping at the base of towering old growth sitka spruce, red cedar, western hemlock and douglas fir forests is a marine ecosystem that is home to keystone species of salmon, halibut, and other fish that bears, wolves and birds depend on. Orcas and humpback whales also reside in the deep, protected inlets. (B4Apres)

Enbridge Inc, a Calgary-based oil and gas company has proposed the construction of a 1,170 km pipeline running from Alberta’s tar sands to Kitimat on British Columbia’s west coast. From here, crude oil would be loaded into super tankers bound for Asia. Before reaching the open ocean, these tankers would first need to pass through some of the most dangerous navigable waters in the world―the narrow inlets of the Great Bear Rainforest. (B4Apres)

“STAND” will be the second major film project for B4Apres. The first, “Azadi: Freedom” documents skiing, culture and politics in Kashmir. Azadi (trailer above) was released in the Fall of 2010, and can be purchased on the B4Apres website.

Sh*t Canadians Say

I know we’ve worn out the Shit People Say videos but since I’m a transplant Canadian I think this one is pretty funny. Basically a spot on impression of the Ol’ Canadian. Countless night’s have been spent watching “Hockey Night in Canada” sandwiched between two Canucks who scream OH CANADA. Trips to Whistler don’t happen without a stop at the Tim Hortons for a double double and some Tim-bits.

"Charlie Abouuuut time you get out of Canada Eh"

Funny but still not as good as the South Park impression of the “beady eyed flappy headed” Canadian:

World’s Largest Game of Dodge Ball | OH CANADA!

February 12th, 2012 by

Ok, 20 bucks says there were a ton of injuries/people crying by the end of this.  4979 people playing dodge ball sounds fun, but after seeing this I’m not so sure.  Maybe if this was played on a soccer field but indoors like this, wow.  Just wow.

Thanks goes to my fellow Canadians,
just when I thought you can’t top yourself you go and do something like this……………………………………………..
…………………….And totally redeem yourself.

1,200 students, staff and faculty at the University of Alberta unofficially smash the Guinness World Record for most players in a single dodgeball game at the Universiade Pavilion better known as “The Butterdome” in Edmonton, Alta.  The former record was 450. The event was organized by the U of A students’ union. Video by Ryan Jackson / Edmonton Journal.

Would you want 100 balls flying at your head? Seems kinda fun but also kinda sketch at the same time. Whats your call?

Dodgeball is pretty fun. eh.

Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline | A Knife In The Heart of The Great Bear Rainforest

February 8th, 2012 by

Those living in BC, Canada, or Northwest North America all most likely all aware of the proposed Enbridge Pipeline Project that will carry oil from the Alberta oil sands across BC to be pumped into oil tankers in the heart of The Great Bear Rainforest along the BC West Coast. This pipeline has the potential to destroy one of the worlds most amazing places of wilderness and cause great health problems in surrounding communities all for the 560 long term jobs that will result from the pipeline for people looking to work in BC.

The video above was released February 6th on youtube and embodies some of the many controversies surrounding the Enbridge Northern Gateway and the effects it could have on the environment and health of people in the case of a pipeline rupture or oil tanker spill through past experiences had by Enbridge.

Over the past few years, the BC proposal has stirred much of BC’s media and social networking sites and has been a constant story in papers, on TV news channels, and all over the internet. It is clear that the majority of BC citizens are against the Pipeline but it is still yet to be abolished. Protests have been held all over the province, and people others have been sending letters to politicians to ask them to stop the building of the pipeline.

A pair of surfers sponsored by Sitka Surfboards made the trip up to The Great Bear Rainforest to learn about the consequences of a oil spill and to show the beauty that the BC West Coast has to offer.

Facts on the Enbridge Pipeline

  • Will provide 3000 temporary jobs and only 560 permanent jobs to BC workers
  • Will carry 500,000+ barrels a day to be pumped onto oil tankers and sent to Asia
  • The pipeline will have a diameter of 36 inches and be 1,177 km long (good on Enbridge for providing that statistic in a mix of imperial and metric)
  • The pipeline will cross over 1000 streams and rivers
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in 2017.

If you are a Canadian resident and are opposed to the pipeline, please contact your government representative and attend any possible protests and hearings and have your voice heard. If you are not a Canadian resident but still wish to have your voice heard, you can too write letters to the Canadian government, attend protests if travel is possible, and share content about this issue to create awareness.
