The Story of Small Ski Areas

by Tyler Wilkinson-Ray

The film tells the remarkable story of the Northeast’s remaining small, community-based ski areas and the passion that sustains them.

HOW YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP

Screen shot 2012 09 19 at 2.57.44 PMThis film is being created by a team of volunteer filmmakers, skiers, and organizers who will working for free because they want to see this film produced. $5,000 allows us to make the project a reality and produce a short basic film. The more support we get, the more professional and comprehensive our product will be. While we are committed to working on a shoestring, we are dedicated to creating a top-notch film. There are some things that we just can’t compromise on:

$25 will pay for a ski specific camera mount

$50 will pay for the cost of one film festival submission.

$75 will pay for a full tank of gas and wear and tear for our vehicle to visit ski areas or conduct interviews

$150 will pay for an external hard drive to hold the digital video for editing

$300 will pay for a professional editing software

$500 will pay for the rental of a computer capable of editing high resolution footage.

$1,000+ will pay for the rental of sound and video gear for the winter

God, I hope you’re being sarcastic. Skiers at these small areas are much more skiers than anyone who desires ski-in ski-out lodging. This is about family fun, and a beer from the back of your pick-up at the end of the day, not $8 hot chocolates.

I learned at a small, now defunct ski area (Maple Valley) and a roper tow run by our town’s parks and recreation department (Memorial Hill) I loved those weekends every winter.

  7. Thanks for the support up top. And the film has nothing to do with (the silly) east/west debate. We’ve been contacted by small ski areas across the West asking to be included. Not sure if we can make that happen this season but the film is more about the model of ski area that gave birth to the sport, the people who are running them, and the people who are able to ski at them. Keep helping us spread the work. The response has been amazing so far.
