Seven Skiers Die in Japanese Avalanche

Seven skiers are dead following an avalanche on Mt. Masago, Japan. The group of backcountry skiers, four men and three women, triggered a slide estimated to be 30 meters wide and 600 meters long. The victims were evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital, where they were declared dead.

Police were still searching the mountainside for other potential victims. The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

    very sad. this area is very easy access and receives heavy traffic this time of year. here’s some video showing the zone and a bit of the rescue effort. note how tracked up the zone around it is.

      It’s a small slide but it looks like a 2 meter crown above a terrain trap (gully). I wouldn’t be surprised if they were buried under 2 or 3 meters of snow… Very sad news…

    A friend was on site, he posted to Facebook calling for help. The locals responded and the police were notified in minutes.
