Because your boots are too big and your heel is moving around.

Great socks for the person who skis once a month in a boot that is too big for them.
        Not durable or smell resistant

You don’t wear just the wool socks in the house, do you ? Take them off as soon as you are finished with whatever footwear or boot you’re using them in, and put on something else. My dogs (and myself, on shoes) track in acidic debris from being outside in the mud/trails/yard in the winter, and unless you are cleaning your floors up really meticulously, using a neutralizer, the acids from dirt will just go after any sort of natural fiber and weaken it. This is also why horse sweat tends to deteriorate real leather, because it is slightly acidic and it then it mixes with the hay/barn dust and you must rinse/wipe off your horse tack regularly after each use, if you want it to last. Wearing good natural fiber socks in house= disaster.

Sock care: obviously, just rinsing them out with water, and air drying them makes them last longer. I don’t put these wool things in the dryer, and I frequently find it’s easier to quickly hand wash them, as part of a shower routine. ( I was gifted with several pairs of really nice smartwool socks, and I’m NOT going to see the stupid washing machine lose them or my feet grind them up, I like them too much, and they don’t give me rubs or blisters.)

If you have really thick skin on your heels, you may be slightly vitamin/mineral deficient. You will also need to gently buff off that skin and put some lotion on your heels, once or twice a week, while waiting for the vitamins/minerals to kick in.

I have had probably 6 pairs over the past 5 years, worn them every day on the hill(blazing warm spring or sub-zero) and no complaints. Worth the $$

Wait for a sale, or ask Santa, and if you luck into a few smartwoolies, you’ll understand the care routine, especially if you’re prone to getting swollen feet or blisters, or no matter what, the stupid cheaper socks tend to creep in the boot or bunch up, or pinch badly at the ankles under the boot buckles… gaaaah. 1 pair, Still only a fraction of the cost of the ski boots or one regular price lift ticket.

Smartwool were great socks until the moved the majority of their production to China a few years ago. The guys who started smartwool went on to start Point 6 socks, which are simply the Best Wool Socks ever…. way better than smartwool. Their compact spun wool is much more durable then smartwool and do not thread bare in places such as the heel or forefoot. Point 6 socks are comparable to smartwool as far as prices goes, but far superior when it comes to durability and over all sock quality.
