Several of of the most well known, well respected individuals in the ski and snowboard world will be in Washington this week, speaking on behalf of not only their constituents, but the planet. Congress is very used to being influenced by lobbyists, however, more often than not the reasons are not for something that would be helpful to people and the planet.
One of the most environmentally progressive ski resorts in the world is Aspen. Aspen Skiing Company’s VP is Auden Schendler. He is heading to Washington along with Olympic snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, highly respected ski mountaineer Chris Davenport, and snowboarding master Jeremy Jones.
Beyond being well known in the ski and snowboard role for his unreal abilities in the mountains, Jones has also been making things happen through the group Protect Our Winters, better known as P.O.W. on behalf of climate change activism. These individuals are heading to Washington to testify on several issues including but not limited to carbon emissions, and other means that promote climate change.
From the ski and snowboard industry perspective, Auden has continuously argued that erratic weather patterns, that include the possibility for shorter winters, rain in the spring instead of snow, and an overall lighter snowpack are beyond a call to action for conscious snow lovers. He’s also argued that climate change has not only been a wake-up call for the ski and snowboard industries, but fear about the viability of other big industries in the U.S. have not been discussed and analyzed as well as they should.

So what do you all think?
Should we all do whatever we can to help curb impacts of global climate change?
Do you think this is all a bunch of “green” propaganda?
Could you care less?
Will there be less powder to ski/ride in our lifetimes?

Err……. where are you getting this 2%? Scientists don’t even have a concensus. LESS snow?? Have you been here the past few years? Don’t piss on someones leg and tell them its raining, and don’t tell me that the sky is falling.
Can’t speak for unofficial, but Ron, have you heard about the recent 24 event that al gore just ran? He said that there is a consensus that 97-98% of scientists do all agree. It just happened this weekend, google it.
Al Gore. ‘Nuff said.
ronron YOU ARE A FUCKING KOOOK
FIND me in KT ill machette your redneck ass!!!!
Um… This is the first time I’ve ever been called a redneck, whiteboy. I was at KT 118 times last year. We’ll see eachother soon. Bring the machette. You’ll need it.
Al Gore??! are you crazy? that guy is full of it, he’s full of shit, google it!
thats nice i know he might be a kook but atleast he doesnt drive a lifted F-350 to his nieghbors…..if you doubt global warming and GZF about it then kill yourself because i dont want you to end up killing me!!!!
no, drives a private jet. and “kill yourself”? wow, really? thats mature
Read the July 27th, 2011 report from NASA (real scientists). Their 11 year data is showing the models that alarmists are relying on are erroneous in the assumptions that increased CO2 equates to increased heat. They are showing the heat released from our atmosphere is far greater than theorized. Climate change has always occurred. A skier and a politician are now our scientific authorities?
its not just carbon, methane is a greenhouse gas that is ten times heavier then carbon…….so really stop eating meat all the cows farting and burping shitting e-coli………CO2 is just another gas that companies are trying to get deregulated and not labeled as a pollutant…..WTF
if you dont think there is something wrong with clearcut forests, e-coli shitting cattle, and your ok with burning OIL the most adaptive important resource in the world so you dont have to walk your fatass further then a block..
I take offense to your comment about my Bovine friends! Take it back!
propagander or not, humans destroy and ruin to much. So people have to act.

I want my kids and their kids to see the awesome and beautiful places. If that means going “Green” count me in.
As far as I am concerned, if there is a more “green”, way to do something that I am doing now AND I can afford it, I will. Yes solar panels are a great way to generate electricy and save money over the long haul, however, I don’t have $20k to invest in them, or a prius for that matter. However, I can unplug my electronics, drive less, walk/bike more and adjust my living hours to when more natural light is available. This means waking up and going to bed earlier in order to conserve the electricity and heat for my place. Yes these are small steps, but they are steps that I can take to help. For those who have the money to invest, I’d say go for it and help out the environment. There is my 2 cents. Take it or leave it, but that is what I have done and will continue to do.
I’m all for getting off oil and to stop burning gas to run cars. More solar, bus, bike, walk, etc. If we left to gov’t and corporations, we will be sorry…
Count me in!
We should be careful what we ask government to do for us. Their only tool is force. Additionally, government is probably one of the worst polluters (just look at all the stuff they blow up around the world). And, if you think about it, it is government that often protects industries from facing litigation for pollution. They give blanket regulations that allow for some damage to the lives and property of others. The more power we give to government the more ability they have to protect polluters who might otherwise face litigation and voluntary market forces. Although I think the intentions are good, I’m skeptical and would rather see voluntary efforts than looking to the power of political pull (force).
It is foolish to base the environmental movement on global warming. There are factors much more powerful that effect climate change than just greenhouse gasses. Solar activity, changing geography, ocean currents, The Milankovitch cycle( thats wobbles in the earths orbit around the sun for all of you that form strong opinions based on news tidbits and not self education) volcanoes, ect. all can change earth temps easily. Ice cores have shown that temps change violently and frequently. The fact that our climate is as stable as it is right now seems to be dumb luck for the human race. No one knows what is going to happen. That said, Way to go POW for working for what you believe in! There is no doubt that acid rain, air quality, oil spills and wars are enough to get my backing regaurdless of wether or not it is causing global warming.
I rode the bus here in Tahoe for 4 years. Did not see a single pro or any one else who wants to “make a difference”. Only mexican americans, J1s and old dudes with to many DUIs. I had no car for my first bit out here. Our bus system is very under used for a place that is so “environmentally conches”. And a prius or other hybrid is no better than a jacked truck with the amount of energy need to make and power them. Remember that coal is not clean herbs, nore is the creation and lithium batteries. Our ski lifts don’t run on magic either. What a funny world.
So yeah, act – go use our public transit this winter.
In the mean time you can find me cruising my 4Runner. Stick your thumb out and I’ll give you and your friends a ride, but please do not forget gas or grass shows your appreation.
Al Gore is a fool making money by mixing pseudo science to make himself and a few others $$$! Look at what he never wants to discuss at http://aip.org/pnu/2003/split/642-2.html. This has been in factual scientific journals for years and what does he attach himself and his jetset life to? Fame and fortune are his motivation when he doesn’t acknoledge that you cannot do anything fighting this battle. Co2 that is produced by humans is a miniscule drop in the bucket and could be counteracted by plaanting some trees. Solar flares and Volcanoes are something we cannot control at this time. Lets keep our water clean, out air free of polution, etc. I grew up visiting Los Angeles occasionally and being seriously effected by smog. Where is it now, just a fraction of where it was. We do a great job but we don’t need a boogieman like climate change to chase after. Fight profiteers like Al and tell them where they can out their carbon credits they have made billions on!
This is so wrong and short sighted I don’t even know where to start. You have no idea what global warming is obviously – the mechanisms, the problems, and the solutions. Comparing smog and global warming is like comparing a runny nose to terminal brain cancer. The science is there dude. But I know it’s a lot easier and less work to listen to Fox News and hate Al Gore….
Ahhhh, if it was only as easy as planting some trees…..
red neck your an idiot a prius or a hybird require much less energy then a jacked truck. they are not powered by electricity from the grid they make it from a gas engine. And if the were plug in hybirds that use energy from the grid they would still be cleaner then any other car because cali gets 50% of it electric from alterntive sources
and good thing youll pick people up hitch hiking if they pay you
Maybe I ment the energy needed to creat the batteries narrow minded idiot. But from your prospective I see your point.
Keep an open mind, it’s a good thing.
I don’t want people to pay me when I pick them up, it’s a good vibe thing.
Again, your an angry idiot. Open your eyes and see the good.
Anyone checked out this experiment? Looks pretty strong to me and I think fame and fortune Al Gore might have some competition. I’m all for making things more efficient and less pollution but why don’t we focus on the health benefits of such actions instead of global warming. It’s tough to prove global warming but it’s impossible to ignore the rise of respiratory illness and various cancers that are linked to pollution. Anyhow here’s the link to the experiment by the boys at CERN. http://www.eutimes.net/2011/09/cern-the-sun-causes-global-warming/
Oh, and I agree the last few years have been some of the best powder I’ve ridden in my life. I sled and shred in the kootenays of BC and supposedly this year is supposed to be a bumper crop of powder again
What you have to realize, is that it’s called climate change and not global warming for a reason. Weather is getting more extreme in many places (the east coast) and not necessarily warmer. It’s not a coincidence that the past 2 years we’ve been getting incredible storms from D.C. up through Boston. It’s not as bad as the hippies would make you think, but some areas will be negatively affected unfortunately…
Think on this: drought in Texas, massive floods in Pakistan, tornados and hurricanes that are more widespread, frequent, and powerful than we have seen in my lifetime, record setting heat, record setting rain and floods. Seem like the weather is a bit erratic these days? Coincidence with global climate change? Seems like mother earth is already giving us a pretty strong signal. Oh – and what about glacial melting all over the planet? And increasing rates of extinctions of sensitive species? And the acidification of our oceans?
Surely this is all unrelated – coincidence! God is angry with us!
YES – climate change has always occurred. It’s the RATE OF CHANGE that makes this a unique and scary thing.
AND YES – the scientific community is united – at least in California! It’s the politicians, pundits, and conspiracy theorists who like to blow holes in reality (and make money doing so! Al Gore isn’t the only profiteer people!) It took hundreds of years for the scientific community and general public to realize that Darwin’s theory of evolution was valid. How long will it take with Global Warming? It’s alright – we got plenty of time! Not like this is going to happen anytime soon…oh wait….
it’s “couldn’t care less” .. and i couldn’t care less… always was and always will be climate change.
Guy .. Excellent .. Wonderful .. I will bookmark your blog and take the feeds alsoI am satisfied to find numerous helpful information here in the submit, we need work out more strategies on this regard, thank you for sharing. . . . . .
