Very Cold Winter Storm December 6th, 2013

A very cold winter storm will impact the Sierra and western Nevada Friday December 6th, 2013. Up to 2 feet of snow is expected for the Sierra crest with frigid temperatures continuing into next week.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN RENO HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM FRIDAY TO
10 AM PST SATURDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* TIMING: SNOW WILL REACH THE TAHOE BASIN EARLY FRIDAY EVENING
WITH A PERIOD OF HEAVY SNOW FRIDAY NIGHT AND EARLY SATURDAY
MORNING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 1 TO 2 FEET ABOVE 7000 FEET AND DOWN TO LAKE
LEVEL ALONG THE WESTERN SHORE. AT TRUCKEE…SOUTH LAKE AND THE
EASTERN SHORE…6 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW.

* WINDS: GUSTS OF 30 MPH OR MORE IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS AND
GUSTS OF 60 TO 80 MPH OVER RIDGES MAY PRODUCE CONSIDERABLE
BLOWING SNOW…LARGE DRIFTS AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS.

* IMPACTS: DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL BE HAZARDOUS DUE TO SNOW
COVERED ROADS AND LOW VISIBILITY WITH TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS LIKELY
THROUGHOUT THE GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA. THERE WILL BE WIDESPREAD
TRAVEL IMPACTS ON INTERSTATE 80 DUE TO SNOW LEVELS DROPPING TO
AROUND 1000 FEET WITH SIGNIFICANT DELAYS LIKELY. TEMPERATURES
BELOW 20 DEGREES AND GUSTY WINDS WILL LEAD TO BELOW ZERO WIND
CHILL VALUES.
