David Ellis, an English accountant from Lowestoft, had the crazy idea of riding an Austrian single-pipe alpine coaster without any use of the hand brake. Luck for us he was wearing a helmet-cam which gives us all a glimpse of the world through the eyes of a bedlamite.

Screen Shot 2012 02 07 at 7.10.51 PMThis is a single-pipe alpine coaster in Mieders, Austria. You reach the summit via a cablecar and then sit on a small car with a brake lever and off you go. Having ridden it once using a little braking, I decided to try it a second time without using the brakes. This is SCARY! Enjoy the ride!

Note – for websites linking the video, please note that my name is David Ellis (the J is my middle initial).
WARNING – I have ridden almost 900 roller coasters around the world and am highly experienced with on-ride filming…so don’t try to copy this. Coasters are fun, but taking risks could be dangerous. So always ride safely and abide by the operator’s instructions and ride rules! David Ellis

Hi there – FYI the filming was not done via a helmet-cam…it was a hand-held camcorder…I managed to hold it pretty steady with oje hand whilst holding down the brake lever (so it was off) with the other hand. Not an easy thing to do, hence the warning not to try it yourselves.
Glad you enjoyed the video…please share the link with your friends!

So it does have brakes. You just didn’t use them. kind of misleading.

I said I rode it “with no brakes”…doesn’t mean to say it “has no brakes”…I guess that *could* be misleading, but I expect it’s the speed and steepness of the ride that has captured the attention of so many people.
There was no intention to mislead people by the title of the video, although apparently the fact it comes up on mobile phones as “with no bra” might explain why 5.4 million have watched it!

On the single rails you can go as fast as you wan cause eating shit is not really possible. But they have another version where you are in this alluminium half pipe thing and there are some turns where you have to break. I got my as thrown when I was a kid and got road burn all over my face, shoulder and legs. Austria is all about fucking liability which means there is still cool shit out there. Put this in in the states whiplash suit first season.

Glad to see folks are still watching my video :-)

righto – I am sure that hundreds of Austrians have ridden this in the same way I did…shame they didn’t film it then ;-)

Seriously, I still have no real understanding why the video became so popular, but it is rapidly approaching 7 million views, so I am pleased!
