Not much info yet except that it is a man, but the Coroner’s office is expected to release a statement at 8 pm about the incident or incidents. The Vail incident happened around noon and investigators are still looking into exactly what happened. The Breck incident is just speculation for now according to the Denver Post. The season already has a dark cloud hanging over it and now our first death(s) in Colorado of the ski season have occurred. Be careful out there whether it is in the backcountry or white ribbon at the resort. Sometimes I think resort skiing is even scarier than a higher hazard day. I will release more information on this story as soon as I come upon more.
UPDATE:
It has been confirmed, two deaths in Colorado today, one at Vail and one at Breckenridge. The man who passed while skiing Vail apparently lost control while on a beginner run and sustained unknown injuries. The man was 62 years old and his name has not yet been released by the Eagle County Sherrif’s Department. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
In Breck a 20 year old CU Boulder student died after hitting a tree while snowboarding on an intermediate trail. The victim has been identified as Evan Massini from Westbrook, CT. Massini died of massive internal injuries when the main part of his body hit the tree according to the coroner. May these two men rest in peace.

why put up a picture of a random ski patroller at a mountain that is not vail?
Because there are not any photos released yet and very little about the story. It’s a pretty Vaily photo.

No picture needed on this one.
Bummer.
That photo is about as innane as it gets. What is the reason for it at all?
wow ben…. really thats what u have to say about the situation …is that its not the rite picture……wow i get more and more dissapointed at how dum and thought less sum idiots are……rest in peace to victims and condolances to there repected familles.
Sad to see this happen so soon(though any death is sad to see.) It just goes to show you that when people let their guards down inbounds, dangerous stuff happens. I’d rather be hiking when I die!
condolences to the families. nothing more sobering than a tragedy. not such an epic day at the Vail owned resorts.
these random pictures that keep showing up are very unprofessional, just shows how little resources you have when you write a story. clean it up. this site is straddling the line between just f’in’ around and trying to be a news source. I never know where you’re coming from. a little more self-criticism seems in order
This site is becoming more and more popular and i think people are expecting too much. It’s “unofficial” news, a place to spread the happenings in the ski/snowboard world that people might be interested in but 9 out of 10 times won’t be in you’re local newspaper. These editors aren’t experts in every topic they write about, but that’s what the comments are for. For someone to chime in and share some knowledge or a link that may lead to an official expert on the topic. If I want to know the details of the vail accident I’ll go to vaildaily.com or if I want to know more about avalanche laws in Austria i’ll look it up or wait for someone who is knowledgeable on the topic to make a comment. Keep up the good work unofficial networks and keep spreading the hearsay and posting sweet edits of people tearing up the mountain.
its scary out there on the white ribbon….be careful folks
Terrible news
I agree with all the comments. This is truly sad and I feel for the families of these men. First and foremost, I am sorry for your loss. Second, the picture is very morbid. I’m sure the body on the sled in the above picture is most likely of a living person, however this was not the case at both Vail and Breck yesterday. I def think another picture should be used as this one is in poor taste. While Unofficial is gaining in popularity it is by no means a new outlet. Remember it is called Unofficial for a reason.
Keep up the strong work boys and remember to think before you post. How would your family feel if this article was about you and they showed a dead guy (not really dead) on a sled getting carted off the hill. I’d rather see a generic pic of the two mountains than this very sad reminder of the last tracks our fallen friend/family will make.
