Quick hit side country routes?

Day long adventures in the backcountry?

Whatever your approach, the Agent Pack from Black Diamond Equipment proves to be a solid companion. The Agent’s sleek, efficient design coupled with thought out design and access points make it easy to be prepared for an enjoyable day.

BD's Agent Pack

The Agent features a unique diagonal ski carry system that is perfect for steeper boot packs and ridge line approaches.  The bomber steel cable (see picture above) easily expands to provide plenty of room for planks of all size and style.  Once the cable is positioned behind the rear binding, just snap latch, pull nylon cord tight and lock.  Bang, let’s go!

Two storage compartments are accessed with reinforced zippers that provide quick access to the contents.

Agent's Rugged Zippers

The outermost compartment, also the most important one, includes the avalanche tool organizer pouch.  One pouch for your probe and one for you shovel handle.  The profile of the pack is slightly larger toward the bottom, which provides ample space for the shovel head and additional safety tools.

Avalanche Tool Organizer Pocket

The front, and larger compartment, has a built hydration pouch that easily connects to the insulated right shoulder strap.  Two, again very rugged zippers, allow for pull down access to the entire compartment with plenty of room for extra layers, skins, food and whatever accoutrements necessary for the days adventure.

Front Pocket with Hydration Storage

The Agent Pack’s sleek profile and numerous cinch points make for a very comfortable fit that lets skiers focus on getting the goods instead of a flappy appendage on the back.  Generous padding throughout the back panel and along the shoulder straps is well placed and forms to various layering systems depending on the day.

Additional features include a zippered mesh that is the perfect home for the Leatherman tool, snacks, keys and other miscellaneous items.  The tuck away helmet holder is easy to unfold, attach and does not interfere with the diagonal ski attachment set up.

Pros:

  • Comfortable, efficient fit that stays put.
  • Rugged workmanship that can be operated in all types of conditions.
  • Insulated hydration system that works.
  • Diagonal ski attachment is quick, strong and easy.  More time skiing, less time setting up.

Cons:

  • Sometimes when exploring the woods, the diagonal ski alignment leads to unexpected entanglement in branches.  In truth, given the terrain where my adventures occur, this is an issue whether the skis are diagonal, A-frame or over the shoulders.
