Nate Holland completes a four-peat at the 2009 Winter-X Games boarder cross competition.

ESPN announced Wednesday night that they were cutting boarder and skier cross from the 2013 Winter X-Games in Aspen. It will be the first year in the history of Winter-X without a boarder cross competition and skier cross has been part of every Winter-X excluding the inaugural event. The 2013 games will be the first ever without a cross course, which means of course that Mono Skier-X will also be cut from the bill, preventing popular sit-skiers like Josh Dueck (The Freedom Chair), who won gold in 2011 and bronze in 2012 and defending gold medalist Samson Danniels from competing.

Tim Reed, senior director of content strategy for ESPN X-Games: “There wasn’t one single factor that led to this decision. It just comes down to filling the schedule with how much we believe we need to make the event enjoyable to the fans and deliver on what we need from a product standpoint.”

Reed didn’t rule out that the events could make a comeback in later Winter X-games, but for now they’ll be no skier, boarder or mono-skier X in Aspen at Winter X.

With Skier and Boarder cross cut for the X-Games, it makes room for Snowmobile SnoCross and Speed and Style, cut from last years event, to return in 2013.

6 Time Snowboard X Gold Medalist Nate Holland is not pleased: “It’s a devastating blow to our sport and skiercross, too, because X Games has been our Super Bowl for years.”

The 2013 Winter X-Games at Buttermilk are set for January 24 – 27, 2013. Skier/Boarder Cross will still be an event at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

If you’ve tried to watch over the past few years, it’s been nearly 100% snowmobiles. Sorry for a gross oversimplification, but in my opinion, the NASCAR crowd is more populous & watches more TV than skiers.

If you follow sports closely at all, you should be aware that ESPN is a cash-obsessed soul-less corporation whose chief mission is to sell you razors, tacos, & shitty beer. Hence any time Lebron James takes a dump it’s 2 weeks of coverage, and anything else (hockey, skiing, tour de france, etc.) gets briefly mentioned if absolutely necessary.

Why a quota on sport event counts. The finals of these events would take about 15 minutes of coverage out of the week to be fair. This is the NASCAR for mainstream ESPN sports fans, why dump it? Costs to produce a course and televise could be recouped with just one additional sponsor. Why not get the marketing team to step it up instead?

X-games lost a lot of appeal for me when they began including motors, both summer and winter. Sucks for the athletes affected, but I haven’t paid attention to the x-games in years..

So they cut one of the fan favorites out yet they still have the worst event in the snow board street… Not even snowboarders like that event and what Is so extreme about 5 foot rails

I agree with Makdindeed, eves since motors were introduced, the X-games has slowly gotten worse and worse. Remember when rock and ice climbing were events? Good times.

Albeit, sky-surfing and extreme bungee jumping needed to go.

I enjoy watching the snowmobiles almost as much as watching skiing so im not gonna blame them but why not make it go for a week if you cant fit everything into the schedule… god forbid if we miss 10 seconds of basketball to make the x games longer
