Tough Mudder @ Bear Valley

This past weekend a couple friends and I headed to Bear Valley Ski Resort for an event called Tough Mudder. Tough Mudder is said to be the hardest one day event on the planet by testing your endurance, physical ability and mental strength. Tough Mudder seems to be new in these parts and apparently is an interpretation of a British Special Forces training regimen.

My friends and I arrived at Bear Valley, Ca around eight in the morning this past Saturday and though we knew it was going to be sunny, the thought of rolling in mud and jumping in water just didn't seem appealing. Non-the-less, the ski resort was filled with anticipating competitors anxious to test themselves to the fullest. Some people were wearing costumes such as superman, Fred Flintstone or even a man thong. Many people were in teams representing a Crossfit gym, like Tahoe's Avalanche team or team Hula, which was a bunch of guys wearing Hawaiian hula dresses. Whether people were serious or there for a good time there was an exuberant amount of enthusiasm and positivity.

Lake Tahoe XTERRA Triathlon

Feeling badass with our number tats before the race

My roommate and I came across this flyer for a Lake Tahoe Xterra (off road) triathlon in July and thought to ourselves, this could be cool.  What we were really thinking was this would be good motivation to get in better shape and do some toughening up in the offseason.  We had roughly four weeks to train so we quickly hit the XC bike trails, Donner Lake for swimming and various trails for running.

Xterra sprint race start

The race was on August 28th and it just happened to be a super windy day with highs in the low 50's.  Perfect for an 8am swim.  Nonetheless, we barely survived the shortened .5 km swim as we battled 3-5 foot swells.  Frozen from the Tahoe water we then hopped on our bikes and quickly warmed back up as we started the 22 mile mountain bike ride.  This ride is perhaps one of the hardest climbs in all of Tahoe, starting with super sandy Tunnel Creek Road and climbing up and around Marlette Lake to the Tahoe Rim Trail before descending back to Incline Village.

Weekend Happenings: North Lake Tahoe

Chinese Downhill from the movie Hot Dog

Mad Cow Downhill

What:  Skiers and snowboarders race in their respective heats from atop Summit Six chair to the Alpine lodge.  First one down wins an Alpine Midweek + Sunday season pass for next season.  Sounds like a chinese downhill to me.

When: Sunday May 16th, registration at 12:00, event at 2:30 (Last day of resort skiing in Tahoe)

Where: Alpine Meadows Ski Resort

George Hjelte teeing off

Play frisbee golf

What: In case you have never heard of it, frisbee golf is like regular golf but with small disk-like frisbees.  There are often 18 "holes" to a course with normally each hole being a par 3.  The "Holes" are actually baskets and the object is to make it in the basket with as few throws as possible.  It's free, fun and not too snobby like golfing.  Though I love to golf too.

Where: North Tahoe Regional Park and Truckee River Regional Park

Cost: FREE

GNAR Goes to Alaska

Unofficial teaser from Juneau, AK earlier this season

The Unofficial game of GNAR got too gnar for Squaw (our bad) so we had our fun on the road at various ski resorts, but now we are taking it to the next level and bringing GNAR to the 49th state, Alaska.  Athletes are going to get the chance to prove how gnar they are in arguably the mecca of powder and big mountain skiing.  The trip will begin in Valdez with Alaska Backcountry Adventures and Cordova with Points North Heli over the next two weeks.

The internet may be unreachable and slow in the Chugach Mountains so bare with us.  We will try to keep Unofficial updated as best we can.

2010 U.S Freestyle Nationals

This past weekend Squaw Valley hosted the 2010 U.S. Sprint Freestyle National Championships for the second time.  With the Vancouver Olympics just recently being wrapped up, many of the athletes competing were at the top of their game coming into the weekend.  It was action packed with high flying aerials, fast spinning pipe skiing and impressive mogul skiing.  It was definitely a spectacle to watch all across Squaw Valley resort and made for a great weekend.  Congratulations to the competitors and thanks for a great show.  Read on for full competition results.
