Unofficial just learned the very sad news that Antoine Montant has passed away at the age of 30 in a wingsuit BASE jumping accident.

Antoine’s incredible video of rail sliding the old cable car in Chamonix while speed flying.

Antoine reportedly died in a BASE jumping accident in the Collet d’Anterne region of the Haute Savoie in the French Alps near the town of Sixt-Fer-À-Cheval.  Antoine had been missing since Friday, October 21st, 2011.  His body was recovered today, Sunday, October 23rd, 2011.  It’s believed that his parachute failed to open while wingsuit BASE jumping.

He [Antoine] went for a wingsuit jump alone so nobody witnessed what happened. He was found with his parachute being still inside the container with only the pilot chute being outside. Friends believe it only fall out in the impact, not because he was about to open his parachute. – justacro.com

Antoine Montant:

- Speed flyer, paraglider, base jumper, skier

- Considered the world’s best speed flyer

- Sponsored by Red Bull

- World record holder of acrobatic tumbles in a paraglider at 120

- First to combine acrobatic paragliding and BASE jumping

- First to speed fly the Eiger

This terrible accident is made even more tragic knowing that Antoine’s brother, Valery, died in a strange accident in 2006.  Val paraglided off the Salève in France and had a safe flight.  When hiking back up, he slipped on ice, fell off a cliff, and died in the fall.

Love watching that stuff, but man it’s dangerous… action sports are just off the hook when it comes to margin of error. RIP Antoine.

Antoine will always be remembered here in Chamonix where you’re instantly forgotten if you live with your head up your arse but always loved if you smile at the bottom of the hill.
