Last weekend we were skiing powder and chowder. This weekend we are back to June-ary. There’s a small amount of snow forecast tonight, but hopefully not enough to interrupt the current corn cycle. With warm temps during the day and cold nights, things may be quite nice by the weekend. There was the issue of a little rain today mixed with a freeze tonight. Things could be more than a little firm in the morning Friday!
• Alpine is hoping to get Summit back on schedule. The rumors are flying about the reasons for continued delays, but the reality is that we all want it to be totally solid for the remainder of the season. Alpine lift mechanics have always been the champs.
• Alpine is adding Scott to the schedule for the weekend. Coverage on the front side is a bit thin for the Chute or Promised Land. My guess is that Gentian Gully is probably holding snow but may be challenging when you get to the low angle willows. But in spring conditions, the Ridge and Bobby’s offer some good easy access corn.
• Alpine has also said that Sherwood may spin this weekend. Ray’s Rut would not be available, only access through High T. For the Squaw skiers that have begun to “like” Alpine Meadows, this is an area of the mountain you will want to avoid. Never ever take High Traverse and do runs on the back side. The hike is super long, the snow is all corny and spring like, and people eat granola while hiking. There is no Starbucks on that side of the mountain. You won’t like it there. But we sure hope Alpine gets Sherwood in the loop for the weekend!
• On the other side of the mountain…Squaw has KT & Sibo Spinning; the reverse traverse and Palisades are open, so Squaw skiers should be content to stay there this weekend. And we don’t really mean anything by that. It just keeps the crowds distributed over two different mountains and more lifts. That is a win-win for everyone.

Chute off of Scott was good on Tuesday, I hiked it from Hot Wheels. It was a long… long… hike, but so worth it.
Seldom Slides coverage looked okay Monday but rain crust from today may be unpleasant in the trees : (
Hiking at Alpine is never worth it. Everyone should stay at Squaw and enjoy the lift access steeps and other terrain. I repeat, do not got to Alpine if you like what Squaw has to offer. The hikeing all over Alpine is not worth it. Stay at Squaw.
Thanks,
Alpine riders and skiers
You’re right hiking does suck.
I always laugh at this kind of attitude from people about hiking at alpine. they always act like people from squaw have no idea what is going on at alpine. People just go through phases in their skiing life, and those changes dictate what they are after. I spent years at Alpine hiking all over getting that low angle fresh snow – and a few good steeps as well. Great fun. Then at a point i realized i wasn’t getting much better with my skiing so i went back to squaw to ride more challenging terrain. Now i’m getting old and I may go back to riding that medium / low angle High T etc again some day. It’s just all about what you are into at that time in your own skiing progression. To act like your “stash” at alpine is the holy grail of skiing is kinda dumb in my opinion.
No problem, as long as kt is spinning I wouldn’t touch Alpine, you can have it…I may even do some hiking myself today, at Squaw..We do have some nice southern exposure, which will be pretty good when things soften up today….
Just saying it would be nice to enjoy our DAYS of powder at Alpine still. I am hoping this merger does not open the doors for would be hikers that normally stayed at Squaw.
Squaw is an over rated and over accessed resort. It may have some steeper lines but I will continue to ride fresh snow for days at Alpine while your “steeps” at Squaw have been long blowen out by the many skiers and riders searching for each bit of lazy gnar. Let’s not forget the asshole mentality many of the Squaw people have. I am not saying all of them.
Thanks again for staying at Squaw.
im laughing at u not with u ^^^
The point is that there will be more than enough terrain for everyone to spread out this weekend….with hiking good at both mountains. It will nice to not have 20 minute lines this weekend.
Summit’s spinning now…
FKNA!
So is scott
It would be nice if the author would get over his issues with “Squaw Skiers”. I have skied and/or worked at Alpine for the last 23 years and have never understood this attitude. Most everything you post has something to say about “Squaw Skiers”. Squaw skiers have been coming to Alpine for years and vice versa, now with one pass it’s just easier and cheaper. You are who Gaffney was talking about in his letter to the editor of Powder a couple years ago. If your trying to be funny or to stir the pot, your not. Please stop it’s embarrassing.
Some of my best friends are Squaw skiers and athletes. I have no problem with Squaw skiers. I just got back from hanging out with Squaw people after skiing Alpine today. I have repeatedly taken issue with overcrowding at Alpine due to Squaw having a slow start to the season. Their slow start was entirely by choice and entirely avoidable. All of the way through last Monday’s pow day, MANY people have complained about crowding at Alpine on both the slopes and long lift lines. It is not just me. Someone (NOT ME, OR ANYONE I KNOW) took the time and money to print up stickers that said “Welcome to Alpine, Now Go Back To Squaw”. Yes, the feeling was out there that Squaw skiers were contributing to overcrowding.
I am not sure you read the entire post. It ends with this line: “Squaw skiers should be content to stay there this weekend. And we don’t really mean anything by that. It just keeps the crowds distributed over two different mountains and more lifts. That is a win-win for everyone.” Is it embarrassing that you did not notice that? Who am I to judge you?
And facing the reality….if I had such a problem with Squaw, would I have merged UnofficialAlpine with Unofficial Squaw? Uh, yeah, I don’t think so.
Go ski or board and enjoy life 13.
