This year was a rough season for USA avalanches.  Good friends were lost.  It can often be difficult to review this sort of information, but it’s key to our understanding of avalanches and how to avoid them in the future.

Over the past 10 winters the USA has averaged 25 avalanche deaths per year.  This year, we were 5 fatalities over that 10 year average.  Please review the information below.  To learn more about each incident please use the links provided.

Use this information as a tool to aid in future decisions in the backcountry.  Always be safe out there.

The following information is from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center:

Really scary total when you factor in how many less people were even in the backcountry due to poor conditions nationwide.

The snowbikers on 2/25 caught me a bit off guard. I 1st thought it was http://www.skidaddy.com/winterpark/images/snow_cycle_390.gif, & thought who would try to ride these in the BC. Read the details of the slide where they explained these http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7k4vq02xEo4/TNFIN8k3jRI/AAAAAAAABMY/g60XrCDV9Xk/s1600/explorer-snow-bike-17.jpg

Horrifying and very sad year for accidents.

Not that it matters but the death near Snoqualmie pass was actually not in bounds..although the site has a name locals refr to, it is a permanently closed area not ever open to BC skiers.

The alpy Death was in a place thats unrideable no matter how much snow fell, too steep. He left a young daughter behind, sorry for the loss RIP.
