This weeks news of the sale of Okemo, Crested Butte, Stevens Pass and Mount Sunapee to Vail Resorts made it clear that the mergers and acquisitions activity in the ski industry is far from over. So what ski areas are next?

According to VTDigger, two Vermont ski areas, Jay Peak and Burke Mountain, are expected to be going up for sale.

The surrender of the properties by former Jay Peak Owner, Ariel Quiros as part of a $81 million settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission has cleared the way for the sale of the two ski areas.

Michael Goldberg, the court-appointed receiver for Jay Peak Resort and Burke Mountain Resort,  expects to sell the two resorts before the 2018 – 2019 ski season.

The asking price for the resorts is unknown. What is known is that both Vail and Alterra are gobbling up ski areas in order to offer the most options for their respective ski passes.

Our hunch is that Alterra will pull out all the stops to secure another east coast ski area. Jay Peak’s massive snowfall and rugged terrain also falls more inline with Alterra’s other resort offerings.
