It is being reported that a 12-year-old boy has died after falling almost 500ft off a cliff while skiing in the French Alps with his younger brother.

The two boys were on a ski trip with their family when they skied off the piste at Avoriaz in Les Portes du Soleil. The two ended up in a forest whose trees concealed a massive cliff.

Their father notified officials when the children failed to return to the ski station on Saturday afternoon.

A frantic search was launched and the body of the 12-year-old was discovered at the foot of a cliff in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His 10-year-old brother survived the fall. He was found conscious at  4am on Sunday after plunging almost 500ft. He was taken to a hospital in Thonon-les-bains. No update has been given on his condition.
