The ‘once in a generation’ storm that recently dumped its payload on the alps is causing widespread snowpack instability, which in turn is causing massive avalanches across the alps.
Not only was Zermatt isolated by massive slides but the the French mountain town of Bonneval-sur-Arc was also cut off from the outside world after an avalanche buried the road that accesses the small ski town on Tuesday.
“It’s been 20 years since we’ve seen an avalanche like that in this area” – Alain Duclos, Data Avalanche
An article published today in The Local says that the avalanche debris measured upwards of 23 feet deep on the road. Miraculously, emergency snow removal crews took just a single night to create a passable lane.
