A 36 year-old skier died in an avalanche on Monday afternoon in the Lizard Range near Fernie, BC reports Global News.

The man was skiing with others at the time of the accident. Before the accident, him and another skier split ways to ski different lines. The deceased skier and his partner were buried in the slide but the other skier was able to dig themselves out and look for the buried partner. They later found the buried individual but he had already passed away.

Both people were experienced backcountry skiers and were equipped with the proper avalanche gear at the time of the slide. The danger today in the Lizard range is rated as “High” by Avalanche Canada.
