When it comes to visiting the alps, skiing is only one of the many attractions. Right behind skiing in order of importance is the cuisine/aprés. If you’re visiting the alps this season, make sure to check out one of these mid-mountain dining options that embody the “old world” culture.

Findlerhof | Zermatt, Switzerland

The Findlerhof isn’t just one of the best and most vintage restaurants in the alps. It may just be the best restaurant in the entire country of Switzerland. Everything from their Rösti to the tartare is world-class as is the view of the Matterhorn. Although it’s hard to find (*located inconspicously behind a stone chapel), this spot is worth the search.

Rifugio Ciao Pais | Sauze d’Oulx, Italy

When it comes to mid-mountain dining, perhaps there’s nothing better than authentic pasta and pizza to quench one’s insatiable, powder-induced hunger. At the mid-mountain Rifugio Cia Pais, guests can indulge in classic alpine Italian dishes that are worth much more than their modest prices.

Refuge de Lognan | Chamonix, France

Known for its bomb Tartiflette, the Refuge de Lognan is a mainstay amongst Chamonix locals looking to take a break between the top of the Grand Montets Cable Car and its mid station. The deck offers spectacular views of the Argentiere glacier and is easily the best option for mid-mountain dining in the Chamonix valley.

Cabane Mont Fort | Verbier, Switzerland

The “Mont Fort” has been a mainstay for nearly half a century and it continues to serve up one the best views of any restaurant in the alps. Delicious fondue, cured meat plates, whatever– the Cabane is definitely worth the lunch stop. They also offer rooms for rent if you get a little too saucy.

Rifugio Maison Vieille | Courmayeur, Italy

The Rifugio Maison Vielle is a ski bum paradise. Vintage photos of Cindy Crawford in a bikini are placed seemingly haphazardly next to posters of Alberto Tomba and other alpine ski racing stars. And while the vibe is what makes this restaurant particularly special, don’t sleep on the food either. The pastas, polenta, and pizza are all-time.

Rodel-Alm | St Anton am Arlberg, Austria

Offering fine traditional Austrian fare, Rodel-Alm is not to be missed if you’re visiting St Anton am Arlberg. The vibe is wonderful and people like to get loose on the porch while feasting on pork knuckles and much, much more.

Rifugio Averau | Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

This spot is known as one of the best mid-mountain restaurants in the world and for good reason. The wine is as old world as the dishes and if you don’t mind spending a little cash– eat here. Don’t miss the Frico and Cjarsons. You can thank us later.
