Ever since Mike Rust went missing near his home in Saguache County, CO, a dark cloud has hung over the Salida mountain bike community. Hopefully that cloud is beginning to dissipate after a judge sentenced the man accused of murdering Rust to a lifetime spent in prison reports Bicycling.

47 year-old Charles Gonzalez admitted to killing Rust back in 2009 and it took nearly 8 years for authorities to arrest Gonzalez on the charge of 1st degree murder.

Gonzalez is accused of burglarizing Rust’s home prior to the murder. Upon discovery, Rust left his house in earnest and appears to have tracked down Gonzalez mid-escape. An altercation ensued and Gonzalez shot the mountain bike legend in the head. His body wasn’t discovered until 2016. Gonzalez was later linked to the murder and was charged with the crime. He was already in prison for an unrelated offense.
