Micahel Lillis, an olympic hopeful in the aerial freestyle discipline, died in his sleep sometime during the early morning hours on Saturday in East Rochester, NY reports The US Ski Team.

Lillis was a beloved member of the US Ski Team who practiced at nearby Lake Placid. He was between training camps at the time of his death. Michael’s older brother Jon was already established as one of the best aerialists in the world while Mike was steadily moving up the ranks.

US Ski & Snowboard CEO Tiger Shaw commented on the tragedy saying, “we are a family and as a family our entire team grieves for Mikey, his own family and his teammates.”  Authorities have not said what caused the skier to pass away in his sleep.
