The surf has been damn close to perfect at this year’s Corona Open J-Bay competition but after Mick Fanning had to punch and kick an aggressive shark during last year’s event– the World Surf League isn’t taking any chances.

A breaching Mako Shark yesterday forced WSL commissioner Kieran Perrow to cancel the remaining heats. After the shark was spotted in the back of the lineup, jet skis were promptly dispatched to scoop up competitors before things got dicey. Event organizers are planning on resuming competition sometime today… sharks permitting.
