At the ripe age of 50, Gary Fondl did what no other 50 year-old did that year. He went and skied 500,000 vertical feet worth of Colorado backcountry terrain using only human power.

According to the Vail Daily, The Frisco resident and avid backcountry powder skier was inspired by a friend who was on his way to skiing a record 2.5 million one year prior. Aaron Rice of Alta told Fondl he should go for 500,000 in honor of his own 50th birthday. For a powder addict like Fondl– it was a call to arms.
