The same cable cars skiers have ridden in since 1976 are now in peril as the lease on La Grave’s iconic telepherique ends this June.

According to the Financial Times, the only lease application being considered is from a “semi public” resort group known as SATA, which owns nearby Alpe d’Huez. Speculation is that the two resorts could ultimately be connected via a chairlift interlink using Les Deux Alpes.

Hardcore backcountry skiers are praying that doesn’t happen.

Still, the mayor of the village of La Grave has put the lease up for grabs and if nobody other than SATA steps up, ‘Le Meije’ may never be the same. Time is running out before someone grabs it and come June– one of the best ski areas in the world will likely have a new operator. All we can do is hope that the person who leases La Grave is a skier with a sympathetic streak for the backcountry.
