A pair from Boston are believed to be dead after getting engulfed in an avalanche during a snowshoe tour near Lake Louise, AB reports CBC News.

While heightened avalanche conditions have prevented an on-the-snow recovery effort, a heli-assisted search and rescue operation revealed two transceiver signals above the avalanche path. RCMP has since notified the families of the situation and the recovery effort should continue today weather permitting.

The two persons were reported missing after they failed to check out of their lodging on Tuesday. Their rental car was later found at a trailhead north of Lake Louise off highway 93. Safety personnel reported following their tracks, which ended in the debris left behind by the avalanche.

*Our deepest condolences go out to the victims’ friend and family.
