A Jackson resident is dead following a 1,400′ fall into an unnamed couloir off the South Teton in Grand Teton National Park reports East Idaho News.
26 year-old John “Jack” Fields was ascending the South Teton with a group of three others on Wednesday morning when he tumbled into an unidentified couloir between the Amore Vida Couloir and the South Teton’s Southeast Face. Estimates indicate Fields fell roughly 1,400′ before coming to a stop.
Members of his party alerted local authorities to the situation at 11am and a helicopter with Teton County Search and Rescue reached the body by 1:45pm. He was later pronounced dead on the scene. Field’s backcountry partners waited below the summit of the South Teton until the recovery was completed. They ultimately skied out Garnet Canyon and returned at the trailhead at 10:30pm.
*Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s friends and family.
