“It’s one of those situations where we’re having too much of a good thing. We’re thankful it’s not on the weekend.” White Pass Ski Area Marketing Director Kathleen Goyette

White Pass Ski Area was closed for operations today due to an avalanche closure of U.S. Highway 12 in both directions. Yakimaherald.com reports Washington State Department of Transportation crews are working to clear the avalanche debris near Wildcat Creek, about 37 miles west of Yakima.

WSDOT officials report an avalanche with an approximated crown height of six feet slid off White Pass and landed west of the tunnel Wednesday around 9:30 a.m. WSDOT opened an eastbound lane to allow employees and 400 customers to leave shortly after noon but westbound traffic is still not permitted.

According to a White Pass press release on their Facebook page, ski slopes will be open for business Friday:

“WP IS CLOSED for the rest of today due to snow slides on US 12. We are planning on being CLOSED THURSDAY also since we expect continued slide activity on US 12. We will be open on Friday for normal operation. Safe travels home, here’s one for the road… Zach Mahre and Chris Dauz showing us what we missed

It was bit of a sh*t show on road up as you can tell from this still frame from Highway 12 at White Pass looking east from around 1:30 local time. Lets hope all these folks made it home okay.
