“Jay Bowman has metal screws in his body, a plate in his arm, a broken leg and a head injury, but he’s alive to tell his remarkable story of survival.”

CBS Denver sat down for an interview with Jay Bowman, the volunteer rescuer that was swept away by an avalanche saving a seriously underprepared skier and snowboarder at night in the backcountry near Steamboat Springs.

Hearing his story of being caught in an avalanche in the pitch dark with his headlamp being the only indicator of where he was is truly chilling. Thankfully he survived the avalanche after being swept 300 feet down hill and slamming into a tree and actually finished the rescue before seeking medical assistance for his injuries.

Hats off to Jay and the brave folks at Routt County Search and Rescue. Remember, these guys put there butts on the line every time they head out into the backcountry to save people and don’t get paid a dime.
