Londonderry is a sleepy Vermont ski town whose history is intrinsically tied to snowboarding’s humble beginnings.

Located just outside Stratton, Jake Burton Carpenter started what would become snowboarding’s biggest name in a tiny town of 1,709 people. In order to honor the snowboard magnet’s small start, the Londonderry Arts and Historical Society hopes to garner $1.3 million in order to cast a bronze statue to honor the snowboard maker and his innovations. While Burton only made snowboards in the factory for a single year, the spot marks a special place in snowboarding’s history– a history which they seek to preserve reports Vermont Public Radio.
