screen-shot-2017-01-13-at-8-39-34-amThe Summit County Sheriff’s Office was alerted Wednesday afternoon by a group of backcountry skiers that the Maid of Orleans Cabin about a mile up Peru Creek was destroyed by an avalanche. The summitdaily.com is reporting search and rescue crews later canvassed the area with avy dogs and beacon detectors to make sure there were no burials.  It was later confirmed with the cabin’s owner that no one was inside at the time of the slide.

The Maid of Orleans Cabin dates back to the 1880’s but had recently been expanded on with solar power and its own well after being purchased by Joe Hodgson, a photographer who now lives in Washington, D.C. Hodgson’s brother and sister-in-law were snowboarding nearby when the slide occurred, and had stayed there the week before.

The U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Avalanche Information Center are warning backcountry skiers to beware of debris in the area and to use caution when passing through. A full investigation and analysis of the wreckage is scheduled for this summer.
