POWDER ALERT SIERRA! HEAVY SNOW WILL BE FALLING NEXT WEEK WITH PERHAPS 2 FEET IN SOME SPOTS FAVORING THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS

“The Sierra gets deep by Tuesday.” The cold front that drops down from the Cascades gets hung up over the northern Sierra late Monday/Tuesday. Heavy snow is likely with 15-20 inches likely by late Tuesday. Significant blower (Low density) will be bringing out the locals! Current models seem to favor the northern areas of Tahoe where south or perhaps Mammoth see significantly less. It’s still a bit far out to nail that assumption as models can shift easily this far out.

Sugarloaf Maine- 2 feet of freshies are waiting!

Sugarloaf Maine- 2 feet of freshies are waiting!

New England just got nailed with an overnight dump of 2 feet at many areas from Maine to northern New Hampshire being favored!

SHORT TERM:

Light snow will be falling over the mountains of northern Arizona, New Mexico and perhaps Southern Colorado late tonight and Saturday (3-6). New Mexico is favored. Arctic air will slam into the West this weekend and drag a cold front from the Pacific Northwest through most of the intermountain region next week. Chases will include the Cascades of Washington and Oregon and the Idaho Panhandle on Sunday (5-10). Snow quality will be excellent.

That cold air drops over Utah, Wyoming (Tetons), and Montana on Monday. Bitter cold temps will enhance quick orographics of moderate snow for most areas Monday (3-7). It’s impossible to nail down details currently (It’s cold air and orograhphics). If you really want me to guess who will nail higher amounts I suspect spots like Bridger Bowl and Big Sky will do better since North flow benefit Montana and often bring deeper surprises for Monday. Light to moderate snow will be falling over the Wasatch and Tetons early next week (Steady light or moderate snow feathers).

Models show higher amounts likely for most of Colorado next week (Late Monday-Thursday) with a solid stream of light to moderate snowfall continuing. Many areas of Colorado will exceed 12 inches by mid-week. Chases will be abundant from Steamboat, Breckenridge, Vail all the way to the San Juans. We will nail details in a later post.
