A 60 year-old skier is dead after getting caught in an avalanche at Mt. Rose in Nevada. The skier was skiing in a closed area of the resort called the Jackpot Chutes.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a skier caught in an avalanche at 10:18am on Saturday and the search party was launched shortly thereafter. They were called off around 2pm so Mt. Rose could perform additional avalanche mitigation for the safety of the rescuers. The search was called off and 5pm and resumed this morning at 9:15. The man caught in the D3 category slide was accompanied by another skier at the time of the incident.
“The slide measured between 350 and 550 ft. wide and ran downslope for 600 to 1000 ft. It buried the skier who triggered it in debris that averaged 5 ft. in depth with some areas covered in more than 10 ft. of debris. ” – Sierra Avalanche Center
Placer and Nevada counties are assisted Washoe County in the search efforts. The man has not been identified as authorities wait to notify members of his family.
