Signal Snowboards has introduced a new direct to consumer monthly payment program to cut out the middleman and pass the saving along to their customers. You pay $35-$55 a month and receive a new board every 12 months and get to keep the one you have.  All subscriptions include Signal Care Warranty, the ability to demo two extra boards at no additional cost and access to factory support.

Here’s how it works:  screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-2-04-05-pm screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-2-04-11-pmscreen-shot-2016-11-20-at-2-04-20-pm

I think this is an interesting concept for certain segments of the market but would have to be significantly cheaper to achieve mass market appeal. Businesses like Dollar Shave Club and their competitors have made astronomical amounts of money in recent years by providing comparable products for fractions of the cost of traditional purchasing methods. Signal Snowboard’s price point of $420 to $660 is reasonable for a snowboard but not sure I would commit to multi-year plan.

I don’t think Signal is trying to undercut and takeover the market cheap razor style, but it might not be the worst thing if they did. I know a few people who would love a subscription based snowboard program with multiple snowboards a year if the price was right.

If you could design a subscription based snowboard program what would it look like? What would be some must haves and some deal breakers?
