The Mount Mansfield stone hut, originally built in 1936, has reopened after an accidental fire on Chirstmas Eve last year caused by Burton Snowboard’s founder Jake Burton’s sons as reported by boston.com.

Vermont Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin was on top of Mount Mansfield to celebrate the reopening ceremony. He had this to say about the historic occasion when he spoke with Lisa Rathke of The Associated Press:

‘‘I am so proud of the Vermont Department of Forest Parks and Recreation for rebuilding this Hut in under 11 months — just in time for ski season so visitors can take advantage of one of the most unique experiences Vermont has to offer.’’

The cabin burned down on Christmas Eve last year after Jake asked his two sons, George (24) and Timothy (19), to prepare it for friend by stoking a fire in the woodstove. The boys started a fire and then rested some wet wood to dry against the stove and left the cabin at 2:40pm. The friend never showed and the decimated structure was discovered by a lift mechanic at 7am the following day.

Insurance will pay for most of the estimated $276,000 restoration project, after a $100,000 deductible according to burlingtonfreepress.com. $162,000 in donations were received for the reconstruction, including $150,000 from the family of Burton Snowboards founder Jake Burton Carpenter.

The restored stone hut is as close to the original 1936 structure as possible with some safety and conformability improvements including “a wood stove will burn a lot more efficiently.”

Here is an Instagram post from Jake Burton from two days ago:
