“One can likely assume that he was stealing stuff from places in town and selling it on GearTrade.com.” -Aspen Police Detective Jeff Fain

Between $13,000 and $14,000 in cash, numerous articles of ski gear with price tags still attached and an industrial-strength wire cutters that could be used to remove store security tags were found in the 2005 Nissan Xterra belonging to a man who had been living in an illegally built shack on Aspen mountain according to The Summit Daily.

Police also found uncashed checks from Geartrade.com and shipping receipts from the Aspen post office in 57 year old James Hogue’s 2005 Nissan Xterra. Hogue is suspected of living in an illegally built shack (which is fully enclosed and insulated) on the westernmost peak on Aspen Mountain for the last 1.5 to 2 years.  screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-9-35-21-am

A local hiker discovered a cache of skis, snowboards and bike frames under a tarp outside his makeshift dwelling and alerted authorities. Also, resort employees witnessed Hogue loading suspect looking duffel bags into his SUV which had a ski patrol parking pass hanging from the rearview and contacted authorities. An Aspen library patron spotted him Thursday using a computer in the basement and called the police.

Among the items found, Officer Jeff Fain discovered about high end 20 ski jackets, each between $400 and $500.

“He’s got a whole ski-gear swap running out of the back of his truck here.”

Pitkin County Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely has ordered Hogue held on a $5,000 bond on a felony charge of criminal impersonation.  The charge comes from Hogue’s arrest at the library Thursday when he identified himself as “David Bee from Ontario, Canada” to officers. What a dick.

*BONUS SKETCHY BEHAVIOR: Hogue impersonated a 16 year old in his 20’s and fraudulently competed for the Princeton track team in his late 20s. Read on here.
