Significant snow has fallen in the Cascades of Washington! We have measured 3-4 feet in areas of the northern Cascades (Mount Baker) per automated Snotel sites and 1-2 feet in the southern areas. Snow will taper off later today with additional colder systems likely late this weekend through early next week (Moderate amounts, colder, better quality).
The weekend will feature chases to the northern or southern Sierra on Sunday/Monday when moderate to heavy snow will break out after midnight and turn heavy by daybreak Sunday. That system moves south over Mammoth during the day Sunday. Most resorts in the Sierra should see 8-12 inches with perhaps higher amounts in the southern zones. Some spots will likely end up in the 12-16 inch range above 10,000 feet.
Rockies: Our eyes are on the 4 corners region where moderate to heavy snow will break out over Arizona resorts late Saturday and move into southern Utah, Northern New Mexico, and Colorado Sunday/Monday. This appears to be a moderate event for most spots (4-8) with higher amounts possible in the southern or central Colorado (5-11). Winds start from the SW focusing on Wolf Creek Pass, Purgatory and as far north as Silverton early in the storm after midnight Saturday (Taos =wildcard for amounts). Best days to chase are Sunday (Storm ski the south) and perhaps 1st chair on Tuesday (Further north). A shift of winds to the West Sunday morning show highlights over Crested Butte including areas in Western Eagle (Beaver Creek), Aspen, Steamboat and eventually into Summit County Sunday afternoon. Highest amounts are likely to fall the further west and south (Crested Butte, Aspen, Silverton, Sunlight-5-9). Eastern areas will likely be in the 3-6 inch range (Summit).
The Tetons and Wasatch will see light snow through the period (Sunday/Monday) with a better shot of higher amounts Tuesday with colder air and NW flow. By Tuesday or Wednesday next week a good portion of central Idaho, Tetons, and northern Utah will should see 3-5 days storm totals in the 8-12 inch range (Higher amount possible in areas favored by NW flow). Best days to chase might be Tuesday with the coldest air and NW flow.
