Significant snow will be falling over northern California late Friday/Saturday(Mount Shasta) and eventually filter into the Lake Tahoe region late Saturday/Sunday. 10-20 inches will likely fall in far northern California above 4,000 feet. The Sierra that got “Skunked” on the past storm will grab some wet base building snow above 7500 feet, rain/snow mix at the bases and eventually all snow by Sunday as snow levels lower to lake level. “Expect 7-12 inches over 7,000 feet in most northern Tahoe resorts and less over the southern Sierra” That storm splits and moves higher moisture over the 4 corners (South/central Utah, Colorado, northern New Mexico Monday/Tuesday). The northern split impacts the Wasatch, Tetons, and northern Colorado early next week with light to moderate snowfall.
Moderate snow will be falling over northern New England late this weekend that could add up nicely by Monday night (Northern Resorts favored).
Details: Low pressure drops down under southerly flow and strong winds in the Sierra early this weekend. Warm temps will bring high elevation snow near Mount Shasta Saturday before dropping south over Lake Tahoe late Saturday/Sunday. Temps should drop initially with the surge of moisture in the Sierra (Some teases down low) before warming keeping most snowfall at mid mountain or summit elevations. Colder air filters in on Sunday dropping snowfall to the bases behind the front. Some snow showers and accumulations are likely at all elevations on Sunday. Expect decent base building wet snow at most northern resort summits around Tahoe into Sunday night (6-12). Higher amounts of 11-15 inches might be found near the Sierra Crest. Kirkwood might benefit from higher elevations? Currently the southern Sierra looks to get less moisture however will benefit with higher elevations (Confident on snow versus rain but not confident on amounts).
Splitting energy from California heads north over the Wasatch and Tetons (Light to moderate snow) Monday night. “Northern Colorado grabs action Monday night and Tuesday as winds shift to the West, Northwest.” (Steamboat, Vail, Summit County- Continental Divide, Aspen).That system races over the 4 corners (Durango Mountain, Wolf Creek, early next week under Southwest flow (Moderate snow likely). Crested Butte and Silverton may get into the action depending on how far north moisture spreads from the 4 corners. Taos is also a wildcard sitting just south of the main energy.
New England grabs decent powder late this weekend especially over the northern mountains of Vermont (Late Sunday-Tuesday). Expect 5-10 inches over Stowe, Jay Peak, and 3-6 inches further south.
