With uphill skiing at ski resorts literally on the “up-n-up,” the United States Forest Service is granting uphill access at the previously defunct ski area, Dutch Hill reports the New England Ski Industry.

The backcountry ski area project, titled the South of Route 9 Integrated Resource Project, will provide a backcountry recreation zone of 83 acres for skiing in the surrounding Green Mountain National Forest. Along with the skiing, conservation efforts will be focused on the skiing area and surrounding woodlands.
The Forest Service’s decision indicates that the ski area will be “predominantly located around the old trails named Dutch Meadow, Meadow Extension, Connector, and Yankee Doodle, and the upper part of Dyke; these trail areas will be widened.” Those areas will be open for “tubing, sledding and skiing on the lower portion of Dutch Hill, and backcountry/cross country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking on the old ski trails.” The backcountry ski area will be maintained by volunteers as well as members of The Green Mountain National Forest.
